if anyone was running to the man’s aid, but she saw nothing.
She went back to the man and quickly checked his pulse. He was still alive. She searched him for a weapon and found nothing apart from a Swiss Army knife, which she pocketed. On her knees, she searched the area immediately around him as well but didn’t find a weapon, but she did notice the beam of light his flashlight sent across the floor. Revealed in its beam she saw the battery. She scrambled toward it and seized it, then took out the terminal and tried to insert the battery and replace the cover, which was cracked and would not remain in place.
Munroe noticed a light playing on the windows of the swinging doors just as Yamaguchi finished inserting the battery. He saw the blue telltale glow of the LCD turn on and then found the field.
Yamaguchi saw the welcome message on the terminal appear. She hoped Munroe was somewhere nearby. She was inserting the ear buds when she heard her partner’s voice say, “… GUN IS UNDER THE TABLE TO YOUR LEFT! SOMEONE IS COMING!”
She looked quickly to her left and saw the table 15 feet away. She got to her feet and ran a few steps while behind her she heard the sound of the swinging doors open and hit the head of the man she had disabled. She saw her weapon under the table and lunged the remaining distance, brushing the table legs as she slid between them. Her outstretched hand grabbed the gun. Her momentum carried her under the table as the door opened again, the man behind it shoving aside the man on the floor. The new intruder reached for a weapon after he realized what had blocked the door.
Yamaguchi rolled onto her back. From her spot under the table, she could see the legs and lower body of the man. She raised her head off the floor and held her gun in both hands, pointing down the length of her body at him, and yelled, “Drop your weapon and raise your hands! I’m a police officer and I will fire if you don’t raise your hands!”
The man could see no one in the room and the location of the voice was difficult to pinpoint. He put his gun down in front of him and slowly started raising his hands. “Raise your hands and turn around!” she yelled again. He started turning.
She was in an awkward position. It would be difficult to get out from under the table without making her situation obvious to him. She tried to draw her legs up and get into a crouching position while still keeping her gun on him, but she bumped a table leg and a plastic cup on the edge of the table fell to the floor. It didn’t make a loud sound, just a little empty rattle, but enough combined with the scrape of the table leg to draw his attention. He looked over his shoulder and saw the cup spinning on the floor — and Yamaguchi’s legs under the table.
The man thought of his chances. He thought she had no shot at him under the table and he was now facing the swinging doors. He decided and leapt at the doors, intending to shoulder his way through.
She yelled, “Stop!” and fired. The sound was deafening under the table. She didn’t know if she’d hit her target. In fact, the bullet creased the man’s left buttock, and he fell backward.
She was still under the table and she tried to duck walk her way out but bumped her head. The man heard the table scrape and Yamaguchi’s curse when she hit her head. He also saw his gun, just a few feet away and reached for it with his hand.
Munroe saw what the man was doing and yelled, “He’s going for his gun!”
She rolled to the side, hoping to get out from under the table. She got back into a crouching position and tried to train her gun on him, but she saw two bodies on the floor and was confused.
The man’s hand closed on his gun. He brought his arm around and fired blindly over his shoulder at her. She threw herself sideways and saw the man try to stand and turn. Her next shot caught him in the chest and he fell back against the doors.
She stood and kept her gun trained on him as she approached. He certainly looked dead, a dark stain spreading on his light-colored shirt. With her foot, she kicked his gun several feet away. She checked his pulse and felt nothing. A groan from the first man she’d encountered almost knocked her over.
She backed away hurriedly and trained her gun on him. The man groaned again. “Alex, keep a lookout outside the door.” He answered her and moved through the doorway kept open by the dead man’s body.
She reached for the handcuffs on
