Killing Them Softly (Cogan's Trade Movie Tie-in Edition)
Mitch said. âYou get me some company for tonight. Iâll take it from there. Fourteen-o-nine. Iâm in the tower, all right?â
âThat,â Cogan said, âIâll do the best I can for you. Thatâs something youâre gonna have to decide.â
âH EâS NOT WALKING RIGHT ,â Gill said. He wore a dark blue tanker jacket and sat opposite Cogan in the Hayes Bickford across the street from the Lobster Tail.
âOf course heâs not walking right,â Cogan said. âHeâs hurt. Heâs all beat to shit.â
âIt takes him a long time to do something,â Gill said. âI seen him, he was getting out of his car. It takes him a long time.â
âHeâs all taped up,â Cogan said.
âHeâs sure slow,â Gill said.
âHe donât feel good,â Cogan said. âYou wouldnât feel good, either.â
âWhatâre we gonna do, Jack?â Gill said.
âYouâre gonna drive the car,â Cogan said. âNever mind thinking about what Iâm gonna do. You just think about what youâre gonna do.â
âIâm gonna get some money,â Gill said.
âFive hundred,â Cogan said, âsame as always, five hundred. You donât fuck anything up.â
âI ever fuck anything up with you?â Kenny said.
âKenny,â Cogan said, âthe worldâs full of guys that never fucked up, and then they did something and they fucked up once and theyâre doing time. So thisâs no night to start, not when Iâm with you. Whatâd you get for a car?â
âOlds,â Gill said. âLast yearâs Four-four-two. Nice car.â
âDonât get attached to it,â Cogan said. âYou got everything in it, I gave you?â
âSure,â Gill said.
âThe way I gave it to you and all,â Cogan said.
âYeah,â Gill said.
âOkay,â Cogan said, âall you gotta do is, you got to drive.â
âWho is this guy?â Gill said.
âDonât matter,â Cogan said.
âNo,â Gill said, âI mean, really. Who is this guy? This the guy Steve and Barry beat up?â
âKenny,â Cogan said.
âI didnât mean nothing.â Gill said. âI was just wondering. I was, there was this guy, really got beat up, he was running a card game. And this guy, heâs hurt, I was wondering if it was the same guy.â
âWho told you about the guy with the card game, Kenny,â Cogan said.
âJack,â Gill said, âlike I said, I was just wondering. I didnât mean nothing. Whatâd he do with the card game?â
âHe had a couple guys come in and knock it over,â Cogan said.
âOh,â Gill said. âSee, well, I couldnât understand it. Steve and Barry.â
âYou figured I shouldâve asked you,â Cogan said.
âI couldâve used the money, Jack,â Gill said.
âYou can always use the money,â Cogan said. âThing of it is, and I didnât ask them, incidentally, you got that?â
âSure,â Gill said.
âThe thing needed two guys,â Cogan said. âThatâs why you didnât get called.â
âI couldâve got another guy,â Gill said. âI couldâve got the guy I had with me onna dogs.â
âUh huh,â Cogan said, âwell, okay, Kenny. Next time I need two guys, Iâll call you.â
âHe wouldâve been all right,â Kenny said. âHeâs a good guy. Only, I donât think heâs gonna hang around much now.â
âOkay, Kenny,â Cogan said, âyou just keep things in mind, I need two guys some time, Iâll maybe call you first and if you can get me a guy, Iâll use you. Okay?â
âOkay,â Kenny said. âSee, I was just thinking, was all, Jack.â
âThatâs your weak spot, Kenny,â Cogan said. âNever mind it. Just do like I tell you, everythingâll be all right.â
âDoes he know?â Gill said.
âNah,â Cogan said, âhe oughta, but he probably doesnât. I donât think so, no.â
Wearing a gray and red tattersall coat, Mark Trattman, his hands in his pockets, emerged from the Lobster Tail alone. The attendant in the snorkel coat started walking down the street.
âSon of a bitch,â Cogan said. âDidnât score tonight
