Lupi 04 - Night Season
that, but itâs been thirty years. Heâs probably fat and bald now.â
âAnd wrinkled.â
âYeah.â Cynna sighed and tucked away the longing. âHowâs Ruben?â Cullen had been talking to him the last time she saw himâabout ten minutes ago. No privacy, none at all, on this barge.
âHe wants some crutches so he can get around on his own.â
âWell, thatâs nuts! He doesnât walk much when his leg isnât broken.â
âBut he can?â Cullen asked.
âYeah, but not much. It exhausts him. Iâm pretty sure it hurts, too, but he doesnât tell anyone when heâs in pain. None of us, anyway. Deborah probably knows.â
âDeborah?â
âHis wife.â Cynna had met Deborah Brooks a few times. She was short, chubby, and cute as a cocker spaniel. She looked like a cheerleader and possessed enough backbone for any two normal people.
Sheâd need it. Cynna tried not to think about how worried she must be.
âHe says heâs feeling different. Stronger. Maybe the Ekiba healer did something to help him with his conditionâ¦whatever that is.â Cullen looked a question at her.
âI donât know. He doesnât know. Heâs seen so many doctors, been diagnosed with everything from muscular dystrophy to Lou Gehrigâs disease, but none of the diagnoses help. Current medical opinion is that heâs got some sort of autoimmune disorder, but it isnât lupus.â
âA misnamed disease if ever there was one,â Cullen murmured.
âFrom your perspective, I guess it is.â Cynna sighed. âSometimes he seems to get better, but it never lasts.â And lately heâd been in his chair almost all the time. If the healers here could do something for himâ¦
âHe also said heâs got a feeling about why heâs here.â
âYeah?â As far as she was concerned, Rubenâs feelings were gold. Precognition wasnât an unusual Gift, but accurate precogs were rare, and most of the good ones were involuntary visionaries, not intuitives.
Ruben didnât see the future. He just knew stuff. He tested at 70 percent, which all by itself blew the curve, but Cynna, like most of Rubenâs people, thought the tests were bullshit. Precognition wasnât a Gift that could be summoned, yet in order to be âscientifically valid,â the tests required the precog to perform on demand.
Idiots. âIâm betting it isnât because of the crush Bilbo has on him.â
âGood guess. Though the gnome shows more respect for Brooks than for the rest of us.â
âRuben makes it hard to treat him any other way. So what did he say?â
âThat heâs supposed to be here.â
âOh, now, thatâs helpful.â
âAlso, heâs sure youâre needed here, which unfortunately puts him in agreement with Bilbo. But so am I. Needed, that is.â
She grinned. âAs something other than a black eye for Bilbo, you mean?â
âA worthy purpose, yet Iâm hoping for a more active role.â
Cullenâs presence in Edge had not been part of the gnomeâs plans. Heâd planned to shove Cynna and Lily through his gate, of course, and had decided to take Ruben, McClosky, and Ms. Wright along, tooâas honored guests. Cullen insisted that âguestâ and âhostageâ were interchangeable terms to gnomes, but Bilbo was treating them okay so far. He claimed his councilâthe Harazeed gnomes who governed the Cityâreally did want to open trade with Earth.
Assuming they survived.
A head popped out of the water near the barge. It was round, orange, and chewing something.
âYou catching lots of fishies?â Cynna called.
Gan didnât bother to swallow before answering, treating them to a good view of partly masticated raw fish. âTheyâre not as good as Lilyâs little fishies, but theyâre fun to catch. I like swimming.â
No kidding.
One of the crew had taught Gan to swim their first day on the barge. Sheâd caught on fast, and after that wanted to spend every waking moment in the water. The crew werenât always available to swim with her, so Cullen had. A lot. No one went into this river alone, not even tritons, former demons, or restless werewolves.
Cynna hadnât gone in at all. Sheâd seen the crocs, and there were supposed to be bigger,
