Mercy Thompson 01-05 - THE MERCY THOMPSON COLLECTION
if she was willing to anger Uncle Mike and enrage Adam in order to get to me.
I was betting that if I left, sheâd wait, because she wanted me to witness the pain Iâd made her rain down upon my friends. But I wasnât sure. Still, it wouldnât hurt.
âThe problem is ... thereâs something a little off about Amberâs offer. Or maybe just after Tim ...â I swallowed. âIâm afraid to go.â
Bran looked at me with keen yellow eyes, weighing something in his mind. âFear is a good thing,â he said at last. âIt teaches you not to make the same mistake twice. You counter it with knowledge. What are you afraid of?â
âI donât know.â Which wasnât the right answer.
âGut check,â Bran said. âWhat does your gut tell you?â
âI think that maybe itâs the vampires again. Stefan lands in my lap to give me a good scareâand look, hereâs a way out. Out of the frying pan and into the fire.â
Samuel was already shaking his head. âMarsilia isnât going to send you to Spokane to get you out of our protection before she takes care of you. Not that it isnât a good idea, but sheâd send you to Seattle maybe, she has some allies there. But in Spokane, thereâs only one vampire, and he doesnât allow visitors. There are no packs, no fae, nothing but a few powerless creatures who manage to stay out of his sight.â
I felt my eyes widen. Spokane is a city of nearly half a million people. âThatâs a lot of territory for a single vampire.â
âNot for that single vampire,â said Samuel at the same time Bran said, âNot for Blackwood.â
âSo,â I said slowly. âWhat will this vampire do if I stay in Spokane for a few days?â
âHow would he know?â Bran asked. âYou smell like coyote. But a coyote smells a lot like a dog to someone who doesnât hunt in the forestsâwhich I assure you, James Blackwood doesnât doâand most dog owners smell like their pets. I wouldnât want you to move to Spokane, but a couple of days or weeks wonât put you in danger.â
âSo do you think itâs a good idea if I go?â
Bran raised his hip and pulled his cell phone out of his back pocket.
âDonât you break them like that?â I asked. âI killed a couple of phones by sitting on them.â
He just smiled and said into the phone, âCharles, I need you to find out about an Amber ... ?â He looked at me and raised an eyebrow.
âSorry to wake you, Charles. Chamberlain was her maiden name,â I told Samuelâs brother apologetically. âI donât know her married name.â Charles would hear me as clearly as I heard him. Private phone calls around werewolves needed headsets, not a cell phone speaker.
âAmber Chamberlain,â Charles repeated. âThat should limit it to a hundred people or so.â
âShe lives in Spokane,â I said. âI went to college with her.â
âThat helps,â he told us. âIâll get back to you.â
âArm yourself with knowledge,â said Bran when he hung up. âBut I donât see why you shouldnât go.â
âTake some insurance with you.â
âItâs Stefan,â I shouted. Before I had the last word out of my mouth, Bran had Stefan up against the opposite wall from where heâd been sitting.
âDa.â Samuel was on his feet as well, a hand on his fatherâs shoulder. He didnât try to pry Branâs hands off Stefanâs neckâthat would have been stupid. âDa. Itâs all right. This is Stefan. Mercyâs friend.â
After a very long couple of seconds, Bran stepped back and dropped his hands from Stefanâs throat. The vampire hadnât fought back, which was good.
Vampires are tough, maybe tougher than wolves because vampires are already dead. Stefan had been one of Marsiliaâs lieutenants, powerful in his own right. Heâd been a mercenary in life ... which had been in Renaissance Italy.
But Bran is Bran.
âThat was stupid,â said Samuel to Stefan. âWhat part of ânever sneak up on a werewolfâ donât you understand?â
The Stefan I knew would have bowed gracefully, expressed his apologies with a hint of humor. This Stefan gave a stiff jerk of his neck. âIâm no use here. Itâs a good
