doesnât seem to affect Blackwood.â
I nodded toward the oakman. âApparently he is able to steal some of the abilities of those he drinks from.â No way was I going to talk about blood exchanges with Chad watching. âThe oakmen like this gentleman here feed from sunlightâso Blackwood gained an immunity to the sun.â
âAnd blood,â said the oakman. âIn the old days we were given blood sacrifices to keep the trees happy.â He sighed. âFeeding me blood is how he keeps me alive when this cold-iron cell would kill me.â
Ninety-three years heâd been a prisoner of Blackwoodâs. The thought chilled any optimism that had survived the ride here from the Tri-Cities. The oakman wasnât mated to a werewolf, thoughâor bound to a vampire.
âHave you ever killed one?â the oakman asked.
I nodded. âOne with help and another one who was hampered because it was daytime and he was sleeping.â
I didnât think that was the answer heâd been expecting.
âI see. Do you think you can kill this one?â
I turned around pointedly, looking at the bars. âI donât seem to be doing so well at that. No stake, no swimming pool of holy water, no fireââ And now that Iâd said that, I noticed that there was very little that was even flammable here. Chadâs bedding, our clothes ... and that was it.
âYou can put me down as something else that wonât be of any use,â Corban said, bitterly. âI couldnât even stop myself from kidnapping you.â
âThat Taser was one of Blackwoodâs developments?â
âNot a TaserâTaserâs a brand name. Blackwood sells his stun gun to ... certain government agencies who want to question prisoners without showing any harm. Itâs a lot hotter than anything Taser makes. Not legal for the civilian market butââ He sounded proud of itâproud and slick, as if presenting the product at a sales meeting. He stopped himself, and said simply, âIâm sorry.â
âNot your fault,â I told him. I looked at Chad, who still seemed thoroughly spooked. âHey, why donât you translate for me a minute.â
âOkay.â Corban looked at his son, too. âLet me tell him what Iâm doing.â He wiggled his hands, then said, âGo.â
âBlackwoodâs a vampire,â I told Chad. âWhat that means is that your father canât do anything but follow Blackwoodâs ordersâitâs part of what a vampire does. Iâm a little protected for the same reason I can see ghosts and talk to them. Thatâs the only reason he hasnât done the same thing to me ... yet. Youâll know when your fatherâs being controlled, though. Blackwood doesnât like your dad signing to youâhe canât read sign. So if your dadâs not signing to you, thatâs one thing to look for. And your dad fights his control, and you can see that in his shouldersââ
I broke off because Chad began gesturing wildly, his fingers exaggerating all the movements. His equivalent of yelling, I supposed.
Corban didnât translate what Chad said, but he signed very slowly so he wouldnât be misunderstood and spoke his words out loud when he answered. âOf course Iâm your father. I held you in my arms the day you were born and sat vigil in the hospital when you almost died the next day. You are mine. Iâve earned the right to be your dad. Blackwood wants you alone and afraid. Heâs a bully and feeds on misery as much as blood. Donât let him win.â
Chadâs bottom jaw went first, but before I saw tears, his face was hidden against Corban.
It wasnât the best time for Amber to come in.
âItâs hot upstairs,â she announced. âIâm to sleep down here with you.â
âDo you have the key?â I asked. Not that I expected Blackwood to have forgotten. Mostly I just wanted to keep her attention and let Chad, who hadnât noticed her, have his moment with his dad.
She laughed. âNo, silly. Jim was not very happy with youâIâm not going to help you escape. Iâll just sleep out here. Itâll be quite comfortable. Just like camping out.â
âCome here,â I said. I didnât know that it would work. I didnât know anything.
But she came. I didnât know if she was compelled, or
