Auf Tour mit Bob Marley

während Präsident Bongo damit droht, die Band nicht wieder ausreisen zu lassen, wenn sie nicht noch ein zweites Konzert in seinem Land gibt. Bob gibt das zweite Konzert, feuert seinen Manager und verlässt mit den Wailers so schnell wie möglich das Land.
    Am 17. April singt er dann bei der Unabhängigkeitsfeier in Simbabwe, dem letzten afrikanischen Land, das seine Unabhängigkeit erhält. Er zahlt 250 000 Dollar aus eigener Tasche, um mit seiner Gruppe und dem notwendigen Equipment in das ehemalige Rhodesien zu kommen. Bei dem Konzert wird die Bühne von einer Tränengaswolke erfasst, als Prinz Charles nicht mehr auf seine Stadionrunde in einem offenen Rolls Royce warten will. Im Sommer findet eine Tournee statt, um in der Presse hochgelobte Album Uprising in Europa zu lancieren. Auch diese Platte enthält wieder viele starke Songs wie »Zion Train« über das irdische Paradies Zion, »Pimpers Paradise«, das mystische »Forever Loving Jah«, »Coming In From the Cold« und insbesondere »Could You Be Loved« in einer schnellen, rhythmusbetonten Version, die in Amerika sehr gut ankommt. Mit diesem Erfolg eröffnet sich für Bob der amerikanische Markt, wo seine Konzerte zum Triumph werden.

    Die Single »Could You Be Loved« aus dem Album Uprising kommt in Großbritannien auf den fünften Platz.
    September 1980
    Bob Marley bricht in New York beim Joggen zusammen und erfährt, das er nur noch wenige Wochen zu leben hat. Im folgenden Monat fliegt er nach Bayern, wo er sich in der Krebsklinik von Dr. Issels behandeln lässt, der sein Leben aber nur um den Preis großer Leiden verlängern kann.
    11. Mai 1981
    Bob Marley stirbt im Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami in Anwesenheit seiner Kinder. Er wird in der National Arena in Kingston öffentlich aufgebahrt und am 21. Mai an seinem Geburtsort Nine Miles begraben.
