English around the world
This TaschenGuide has been written in British English. In the explanations of the false friends there are references to American English terms if they vary from their English counterparts. Here are some useful general points to note:
British English allows the use of ‚s‘ and ‚z‘ in the spelling of some words, such as ‚organise‘ or ‚organize‘. American English uses only ‚z‘.
When you are writing any kind of correspondence on your computer, you can set the regional and language options in your word processing software to British English, American English, Indian English, Canadian English, or whatever you need at the time.
Spelling- and grammar-checking extras also offer you the choice of using different versions of English.
When communicating verbally in English to native speakers, you cannot expect to be corrected by your conversation partner. Even if you ask him or her to correct you, they will probably not do so, either out of politeness, or because they do not want to interrupt the flow of conversation. Watch their faces carefully for signs that they have not understood you, and if in doubt, ask.
Learning false friends is the same as learning new vocabulary, but with the added importance of avoiding bigger misunderstandings.
Here are some practical tips for helping you to memorize new words and phrases:
If you see standard phrases in emails from other people that you want to use in your own correspondence, copy the sentences and paste them into a list. When you need them, you can copy them and paste them into your own emails or other documents.
Write new words and phrases onto sticky notes and put them on your bathroom mirror, your fridge, or a place that you look at frequently – perhaps your car dashboard, as long as it does not obstruct your concentration while driving! You will see the vocabulary again and again when you brush your teeth, are standing at your favourite place in the kitchen or driving to and from work.
