    Remington Lassiter is trying his best to stay out of trouble while he learns the ropes of being a werewolf. When his little brother turns up covered in bruises, he is driven to finally bring their abusive father to justice. To do it, he must face a past he hides behind his cocky, trouble-making attitude.     Jake’s house was in a new subdivision that wasn’t complete. It was one of the nice, simple, creamcolored adobes that were popular throughout New Mexico, with a heavy wood arched door. The only other completed residence in this small cul-de-sac was two lots over to the left.
    There was a frame of a structure half finished a lot down and to the right of Jake’s, but other than that, the place was undeveloped. Somehow the raw feel of the place fit Jake.
Pulling the rubber band out of his hair as he went, Remi made his way up the cobblestone walk.
Rocks, cacti and yuccas dominated the arid landscaping. It gave the place a really masculine and solitary sort of feel.
Taking a deep breath, he lifted his fist to knock. Normally, things just fell into place and felt right— natural—with Jake, but with what happened the other night… Remi hoped he hadn’t ruined the comfort level they shared.
Jake opened the door before Remi knocked. “Hey.” Smiling, he let his gaze rake over Remi like it always did. Only today, Remi felt every bit of Jake’s interest. The attention was like a lingering caress. It took his breath away and made his body tingle.
Standing there with his hand in the air and helmet under his arm, he stared.
Jake was an incredible looking man. He had the dark Apache coloring, broad shoulders and towering height. Even the way he walked with smooth purposeful strides was appealing. Chay was right. Everything about his mate called to Remi. It was terrifying and comforting at the same time. He had never had the urge to give in so completely.
Allowing the instant arousal to wash over him, and not trying to suppress it as he normally did, made it even more intense. His cock was already on its way to hard. “We’re mates.” Oh shit, had he said that out loud?
Jake grabbed Remi’s raised hand and pulled him inside before shutting the door. He didn’t let go of Remi’s hand. Instead, he backed Remi against the closed door and placed his hand on Jake’s chest. “Yes, we are. Are you okay with that?” For once, it was Jake’s eyes that shifted first, but it didn’t take Remi’s long to follow.
The hard thump of Jake’s heart pulsed against Remi’s palm. His teeth dropped and his hand clenched against the thin cotton of Jake’s shirt. The helmet thudded to the ground, followed by the elastic band Remi had taken out of his hair, and he clutched at Jake with his other hand. It was now or never. “Yes.”
Groaning, Jake leaned forward and slanted his mouth over Remi’s. His tongue demanded entrance while he ran his hands over Remi’s chest and down his arms.
“Mmm…” It was like drowning, scary but at the same time there was no use struggling. His own feelings made it hopeless to resist. Arching into the touch felt like the most natural thing in the world to do.
Catching Remi’s hands, Jake placed them by Remi’s sides against the door. He pulled away from Remi’s lips, his breath coming faster. “Keep them there.”
