Harlan's Race
yawed to a knife-edge, disappearing into the blue. Then, with one easy rowing stroke of the wings, the creature rolled into view again. The dance of the whole flock was like a glimmer of slow white lightning moving away across the bay.
Our eyes followed the gulls.
Somehow, like them, we would stay alive.
Like them, we belong to a certain sky, that is ever our refuge and our home.
About This Book
Harlan’s Race was created “hands on” with computer J. 1 print technology.
I wrote it on an Apple Macintosh SE and Apple PowerBook 170. My double-density disks traveled to the MacIIx of Barbara Brown Desktop Publishing, where they were reformatted and typeset using Aldus PageMaker. Fonts: Century Schoolbook and Radiant.
Jacket art and illustrations were created by Laguna Beach artist Jay Fraley, on a Macintosh 8500. He used the Photoshop program to manipulate his photographs of the exact model Tiger track shoes mentioned in the book.
Disks and film containing finished text and art went to Banta for printing this paperback on their Cameron-system belt press.
To me — who first smelled printer’s ink in 1956 in a traditional composing room filled with clattering Linotype machines and splatters of lead — the relative ease and cleanness of desktop book production is a wonder.
