Lupi 04 - Night Season
good guesser, maybe. Uncomfortably good.
âThis baby means more to me than the spell. More than anything.â
It was the way he said itâmatter-of-factly, no dramaticsâthat made her eyes water. Or maybe her hormones were already crazy. She took a second to answer so she could be sure her voice didnât wobble. âThatâs good. Every kid should have someone who puts him first.â
âDid you?â
âShut up, Cullen.â
âFor me it was my mother. She wasnât exactly June Cleaver, but she loved me all the way.â
Heâd started this, hadnât he? That made it okay to ask one of the questions sheâd wondered about. âWhat about your father? Lupi are supposed to be nuts for children.â
âOh, sure, when I was a kidâ¦but it turned out that he loved what he wanted me to be. Not what I was.â
âA sorcerer.â
âHe thought I could give it up. He didnâtâ¦â The breath he drew was ragged. âHe didnât fight for me. When the Rhej said I couldnât remain both Etorri and sorcerer, he didnât argue with her or the others. He argued with me. He fought me, not them. When I couldnât give up so much of what I amâ¦after the seco , he didnât speak to me again.â
âJesus.â Etorri was his former clan. The seco must be some kind of kick-him-out ceremony. Never to speak to him again after heâd lost his clanâ¦that was a bigger betrayal than her own fatherâs disappearance. Cullen had grown up believing the man loved him. âNever?â
He swiped a hand through the air, brushing away the past and her question. âI donât want any damned sympathy. I want you to know that it doesnât matter to me what this baby isâboy or girl, stupid or clever, clumsy, Gifted, whatever. It doesnât matter. Iâm on his side.â
âOr hers.â
âOr hers. I donât want to just see her for a month or two in the summer, either. I want to be part of my childâs life right from the start.â His voice hardened. âI will be part of its life.â
Did he think that things would have been different if his father had been a bigger part of his life? âHow much did you stay with your father?â
âPoint for Cynna.â He licked his index finger and drew a 1 in the air. The numeral glowed faintly, then faded. âSummers, for a month. He lived in Canada. Mum and I lived in England.â
âI thought I caught a bit of an accent. How long have youââ
âCynna.â He stopped and looked at her. âYouâre trying to steer the talk to me so you donât have to talk about the baby.â
âWell, yeah. Of course.â
A smile tilted one side of his mouth and bled into his eyes. âYour turn. Did youâ¦damn!â His phone was beeping. He pulled it from its holster on his belt and glanced at the screen. âItâs just Timms.â
âYou still staying with him?â
âYeah. Heâs okay. Doesnât bother me much.â He frowned at the phone in his hand. âDoesnât call me much, either. Doesnât call me at all.â
âMaybe you should answer it.â
For some reason, that seemed to be a major decision, but finally Cullen shrugged and held the phone to his ear. âYou better not be calling to ask me to bring a loaf of bread home.â A long pause. âShe said what ? Shit! No, you handled it rightâ¦Yeah, tell me about itâ¦Well, you were there. Did sheâ¦no? Now thatâs interestingâ¦I will. With Rule, probably. Thanks.â He disconnected with a scowl.
âWhat? What is it?â
âA reporter from the Post has called him twice, asking to talk to his âstripper friend.â Asking if Iâm really a lupus. Sheâs camped out across the street from Timmsâs place now.â
SEVEN
C YNNA dug in her purse. âIâd better call Ruben and warn him. You call Lily and Rule.â
âShe asked to talk to his stripper friend.â
âI heard you.â She hit 3 on speed dial. It was after eight oâclock, but she was betting Ruben hadnât gone home yet.
âYou donât get it. The reporter didnât ask him about weird beings from another realm. They wanted to talk to the lupus who takes off his clothes for a living.â Cullen frowned into space for a moment. âGuess I should let
