Mercy Thompson 01-05 - THE MERCY THOMPSON COLLECTION
vampires lurking at my door. But there was an oak tree next to my bedroom window.
It hadnât been there when Iâd left this morning to go paint. But there it was, with a trunk nearly two inches around and branches that were a couple of feet taller than my trailer. There was no sign of freshly turned earth, just the tree. Its leaves were starting to change color for the autumn.
âYouâre welcome,â I said. When I started back to go into the house, I tripped over the walking stick. âHey. Youâre back.â
I set it on my bed while I showered, and it was still there when I got out. I put on one of Adamâs flannel shirts because the fall nights were pretty nippy and my roommate didnât want to turn up the heat. And because it smelled like Adam.
When the doorbell rang, I pulled on a pair of shorts and left the stick where it was.
Marsilia stood on the porch. She was wearing low-rise jeans and a low-cut black sweater.
âMy letter was opened tonight,â she told me.
I folded my arms over my chest and did not invite her in. âThatâs right, I gave it to Stefan.â
She tapped a foot. âDid he read it?â
âYou didnât actually kill his people,â I told her in a bored voice. âYou just hurt them and ripped his ties from them so heâd think they died.â
âYou disapprove?â She raised an eyebrow. âAny other Master would have killed themâit would have been easier. If he had been himself, heâd have known what weâd done.â She smiled at me. âOh, I see. You were worried about his sheep. Better hurt a little and aliveâwouldnât you say?â
âWhy are you here?â I asked her.
Her face went blank, and I thought she might not answer. âBecause the letter was read, and Stefan did not come.â
âYou tortured him,â I said hotly. âYou almost forced him to do something heâd never willingly doââ
âI wish heâd killed you,â she told me sincerely. âExcept that would have hurt him. I know Stefan. I know his control. You were never in any danger.â
âHe doesnât believe that,â I told her. âNow you throw him a bone. âLook, Stefan, we didnât really kill your people. We tortured you, hurt you, abandoned youâbut it was all in a good cause. We meant Andre to die, and let you twist in guilt for months because it served our purpose.â And you wonder why he didnât come back to you.â
âHe understands,â she said.
âI do.â Stefanâs hands came down upon my shoulders, and he pulled me a few inches back from the threshold of the door. âI understand the why and the how.â
She stared at him ... and for a moment I could see how old, how tired she was. âFor the good of the seethe,â she told him.
He put his chin on the top of my head. âI know.â He wrapped both arms around me just above my chest and pulled me against him. âIâll come back. But not right now.â He sighed into my hair. âTomorrow. Iâll get my people from you then.â And he was gone.
Marsilia looked at me. âHeâs a soldier,â she told me. âHe knows about sacrificing himself for the good of the whole. Thatâs what soldiers do. Itâs not the torture he canât forgive me for. Nor deceiving him about his people. Itâs because I put you in harmâs way he is so angry.â Then she said, very calmly, âIf I could kill you, I would.â
And she disappeared, just like Stefan had.
âRight back atcha,â I told the space where she had been.
