Mercy Thompson 01-05 - THE MERCY THOMPSON COLLECTION
legible.â
âWhat?â There was enough honest indignation in Kellyâs voice that I was pretty sure it was genuine.
Tony, who was watching the bounty hunter pretty closely, seemed to have the same opinion as I did. He handed the warrant to the youngest cop. âGreen, go call this in and see if itâs real,â he said. âJust for the bounty hunterâs sake.â
Like Tony, Green very carefully didnât look at Adam. âI havenât heard about this,â he said. âAnd Iâd have remembered if we had a warrant for him. We know our local Alpha. I can sure as heck tell you that he hasnât jumped bail.â Green looked at Tony. âBut Iâll go call it in.â And he strode briskly back to his patrol car.
âMy producer told us that the police department didnât want to take on a werewolf and had asked for our help,â said Heart, though he didnât sound nearly as certain.
Holbrook snorted indignantly. âIf we had a warrant to pick up a werewolf, weâd pick him up. Thatâs our job.â
âYour producer told you we didnât want to take on a werewolf,â said Tony thoughtfully. âDid your producer give you the warrant?â
âYes.â
âDoes he have a name? Weâd like contact information for him, too.â
âHer,â Kelly said. âDaphne Rondo.â I wondered if he knew that his heart was in his voice when he said her name. He reached into his back pocketâslowlyâand took out his wallet and extracted a card.
âHere.â He held it a moment when Tony reached out to take it. âYou know this guy, right? Thatâs how you knew this wolf was the wrong one.â Then comprehension lit his face, and he let go of the card and looked at Adam. âAdam Hauptman?â
Adam nodded. âIâd say pleasure to meet you, but I donât like lying. What is it Iâm supposed to have done?â
The younger cop strolled back from his car, shaking his head.
Kelly looked at the cop, then sighed. âWhat a cluster. I take it you havenât been killing young women and leaving their half-eaten bodies in the desert?â
Adam was ticked. I could tell it even if he was looking like a reasonably calm businessman. Adamâs temper was the reason he wasnât one of Branâs werewolf poster boys. When angered, he often gave in to impulses he wouldnât otherwise have given in to.
âSorry to disappoint you,â Adam told Kelly in silky tones. âBut I prefer rabbits. Humans taste like pork.â And then he smiled. Kelly took an involuntary step backward.
Tony gave Adam a sharp look. âLetâs not make things worse, if we can help it, gentlemen.â He pulled out his cell phone and, looking at the card, dialed the number. It rang until the voice mail picked up. Tony didnât leave a message.
âOkay,â Tony said. âIâd like to get a statement from you about this warrant. If weâve got someone falsifying warrants, we need to know about it. We can do that here, or down at the station.â
I left Tony and the police to deal with the fallout, and went back into my office, letting the door shut behind me. I left Sam outside, too. If he hadnât killed anyone yet this morning, he wasnât going to.
I had other matters to deal with.
Gabriel had his youngest sister on his hip, her wet face on his shoulder. The other girls were sitting on the chairs I had for customers, and his mother had her back to me.
She was the only one talkingâin Spanish, so I had no idea what she was saying. Gabriel gave me a desperate look, and she turned. Sylvia Sandovalâs eyes were glittering with rage as hot as any Iâd ever seen on a werewolf.
âYou,â she said, her accent thick. âI do not like the company you keep, Mercedes Thompson.â
I didnât say anything.
âWe are going home now. And my family will have nothing further to do with you. Because of you, because of your werewolf, my daughter will have nightmares of a man pointing a gun at her. She could have been shotâany of my children could have been shot. I will have a tow truck come to pick up my car.â
âNo need,â I told her. âZee has it almost up and running.â I assumed. No telling how much heâd done with his magic.
âIt is running,â Zee said. I hadnât realized heâd come into the
