Only 06 - Winter Fire
lose that black and white one again,â she muttered.
Ute paused on his way out the door.
âWerenât the dogâs doing,â he said. âThat she-goat is plumb contrary. Minute Ghost chases one herd quitter, she high-tails it in the other direction.â
âYou always stand up for that dog.â
âBeen a stray myself. Hard life.â
The door shut behind him.
Instantly Sarahâs expression changed, showing every bit of the fear she felt. She had just remembered what her brother had said that morning.
I have an idea about spying on the Culpeppers .
âConner,â she whispered. âYou werenât foolish enough to go alone, were you?â
With a tight movement she yanked off her apron and hung it on a nail.
âMorgan is watching the Culpeppers,â she told herself aloud. âHe wonât let Conner do anything foolish.â
The words seemed to echo in the room.
Conner .
Foolish .
She ran outside. The door banged behind her. She didnât notice the bite of the wind or the sting of tiny snowflakes whipping across her face.
âConner?â Sarah called. âWhere are you?â
Blindly she ran toward the clump of tall sage where her brother had set up his camp.
âConner? Conner!â
The wind brought her cries back to her, mocking her as she had been mocked once before, when she called out to the darkness and flood for her younger brother.
I found him then .
Iâll find him now .
His camp was empty, but his saddle was still there, still waiting to be used as a pillow.
âConner! Answer me!â
Nothing answered but the wind.
Strands of hair ripped loose by the wind lashed across her face. She caught the hair and hung on to it, twisting it through her fingers like a lifeline.
âNot now,â she said. âNot when Iâve finally found the silver for you! Where are you? Conner! Conner! â
She was still calling her brotherâs name when Case spun her around and wrapped her in his arms. Hard.
âEasy, honey. Easy. Get hold of yourself and tell me whatâs wrong.â
Only when his gentle, velvet voice penetrated her fear did Sarah realize that she was screaming her brotherâs name again and again.
âIs Conner with you?â she asked hoarsely.
âHeâs up on the rim.â
âAre you certain? Did you see him up there?â
âNo, but he knows when itâs his turn to stand watch.â
âHe didnât go.â
âWhat?â
âLola is on watch. Conner never showed up.â
Case turned and looked over his shoulder.
âHunter?â he asked.
âHavenât seen him,â Hunter said.
âMorgan, what about you?â Case asked.
âNo, suh. Nary hide nor hair.â
âMorgan!â Sarah said.
She jerked herself free of Caseâs arms and turned to face the black gunfighter.
âWhy arenât you spying on the Culpeppers?â she accused. âYouâre supposed to be there!â
Warily Morgan glanced at Case.
He was looking at Sarah as though she were a stranger.
âTake it easy, honey,â he said. âMorgan is following Hunterâs orders.â
She closed her eyes as though to shut out everyone, especially Case.
âDid he talk with you about spying on the Culpeppers?â she asked tightly.
âConner?â Case asked.
It took every bit of her self-control not to scream at him that of course she was talking about her brother.
âYes,â she said in an unnaturally calm voice. âHeâs the only one missing, correct?â
Case looked at her as warily as Morgan had.
âIf you say so,â he said carefully, âthen Conner is missing.â
âI say so.â
The bleakness in her eyes made him want to hold her again.
âThis morningâ¦â she said. Her voice went from hoarse to silent. âThis morning, Conner said he had an idea about spying on the Culpeppers.â
Morgan said something scalding under his breath.
Hunterâs mouth flattened into a grim line.
âGo on,â Case said.
âThereâs nowhere to go,â she said. âConner had an idea and now heâs gone.â
âMorgan,â Hunter began.
âIâm on my way.â
âIâll go with you,â Case said.
âSo will I,â Sarah said.
Both men turned to argue.
Three quick shots from the rim cut off whatever the men were going to say. There was a
