guy Dino and I once busted for more than a hundred burglaries in New York. Heâs out of prison now and living here. Heâs a cabinetmaker.â
âWell, I guess thatâs one kind of expert. If youâre all right, Iâm going back to bed.â
âSure, and thanks for calling.â They both hung up.
Suddenly, the front doorbell rang, and there was a hammering on the front door. Stone ran to the door, switched on the front porch light and looked through the peephole. Dino was standing there in his pajamas and robe. Stone opened the door.
âWhatâs going on?â Dino asked.
âI heard a noise in the house,â Stone said. âWhat woke you up?â
âThe phone. I had just gotten up to piss, and I heard it ring. I wasnât sleepy, anyway, so I came over.â
Stone closed the door. âCome in the study. You want a drink?â
âCouldnât hurt,â Dino said. âKeep out the cold night air.â
âOh, let me show you something.â He led Dino into Dickâs little office and showed him the array of weapons. Dino picked up the officerâs .45. âI like this,â he said. âIâll sleep with it under my pillow.â He checked and found a full magazine in the gun.
Stone pointed to a shelf that held a lot of gun leather. âFind yourself a belt and holster.â He went to the bar and got down a couple of glasses. As he was about to open the door to the ice machine, he heard the noise again.
Dino approached. âIs that the noise you heard?â
âYes,â Stone said sheepishly.
âThe ice machine, making ice?â
Stone sighed. âYes. I wonder why Iâve never heard it before.â
âI think youâre a little too tightly wound,â Dino said. âSit down and drink that bourbon.â
Stone followed orders.

S TONE WENT BACK to bed and tried to retrieve the dream with Arrington, but it wouldnât come back. He overslept, not waking until after ten, and he felt fuzzy around the edges. He wasnât accustomed to drinking in the middle of the night.
He sat up in bed and called Arringtonâs home in Virginia. A maid answered.
âSheâs not here, Mr. Barrington. Sheâs in New York, she and Peter. You can reach her at the Carlyle.â
âThank you,â Stone said. He called the Carlyle and asked for Mrs. Calder.
âHello?â she said, sounding chipper and cheerful.
âItâs Stone.â
âOh, hi. I was about to call you. Iâm in New York.â
âI know; I just called you.â
âOh, thatâs right. Sorry. You want to have dinner tonight?â
âIâd love to, but itâs a plane ride.â
âWhat?â
âIâm in Maine.â
âWhy? What are you doing in Maine?â
âI have a new house on an island called Islesboro. Why donât you summon up the Centurion jet, and you and Peter come up here for a few days?â As the widow of Centurion Studiosâ largest stockholder, she had access to their jet.
She was silent for a moment. âAll right, but it will have to be tomorrow, maybe the next day. I have some shopping to do here.â
âTell the flight department at Centurion that youâll be landing at Rockland. Iâll meet you there in my airplane. Itâs only another ten minutes of flying, but the strip on the island is too short for a jet.â
âAll right. What will I need in the way of clothes?â
âNothing you couldnât find at L.L. Bean.â
âIâve got to run; I have a hair appointment, but Iâll call you later and give you an ETA.â
He gave her the number and hung up, feeling wonderful. He bounded out of bed, shaved, showered and began getting dressed when the phone rang. âHello?â
âItâs Ed Rawls. I need to see you at Don Brownâs house right now.â
âOkay. Whereâs the house?â
Rawls gave him directions.
âWhatâs going on?â
âIâll tell you when you get here.â
Stone finished dressing and went downstairs. Dino was having breakfast in the kitchen, and Stone grabbed a piece of his toast. âCome on. We have to be somewhere.â
âWhere?â
âNot far.â
It was a beautiful day, and they took the little MG, top down.
âArrington and Peter are coming up tomorrow or the next day,â Stone said.
âYouâre
