ingenuity.â
âYou think sheâll make station chief someday?â
âSheâs smart enough; I think it will depend on whether thatâs what she wants. She seems happiest in the field right now.â
âWhat about you, Lance? Do you think youâd make a good deputy director for operations?â
Lance hadnât expected that, but he didnât hesitate. âI believe I would, Kate.â
âCertainly, everything in your career points to that; youâve done very well.â
âThank you, Kate.â
âThereâs an attitude among the older hands here that makes them suspicious of younger men who seem to want things a little too much. Itâs almost British; the Brits donât like naked ambition.â
âIâve tried to keep my ambition very well clothed,â Lance replied.
Kate laughed aloud. âYes, well, there is that.â She rearranged herself in her chair. âDuring the next four yearsâassuming my husband is reelectedâI want to replace retiring senior people with very high quality younger people who will set the tone at the Agency for years, perhaps decades to come.â
âIâve no doubt that he will be reelected, and I think thereâs ample talent here for you to do that.â
âI must tell you that Dick Stoneâs murder knocked a big hole in my plans. I thought he had it in him to be the best DDO in the history of the Agency, and that, after some time had passed, he might replace me when I go.â
âIâm in complete agreement on Dickâs brilliance; I worked for him for seven years, and I saw it at first hand. I learned a lot from him.â
âI believe you did, Lance, and thatâs one of the main reasons youâre under consideration for the job he never had a chance to fill.â
âThank you, Kate.â
âI know itâs difficult working for Hugh English, but he was kind enough to postpone his retirement and keep doing the job until our vetting procedure is complete. Be nice to him, wonât you?â
Lance had always found Hugh English grating, but he had been smart enough to keep it to himself and not join in the chorus of complaints from the other, younger men in his former station. âOf course; heâs a good man.â
âLance, are you going to leave in a huff if you donât get the job? Go out and make some money as a consultant for the networks and the oil companies?â
Lance was considering doing just that, if he didnât get the job. He took a deep breath. âNo,â he said. âIâm a career officer; Iâm here for the long haul.â
âGood,â Kate said, getting to her feet. âThank you, Lance; keep me posted on progress in St. Marks.â
âCertainly, Kate,â Lance said. He returned to his office more slowly than he had come. Could Lee really be considering him, or was that just a ruse to keep him pumped on the business in St. Marks?
The balance could tip either way, he thought. Heâd have to do something to get a thumb on the scale.

T eddy Fayâs cell phone vibrated against his ribcage. âYes?â
âMr. Elliot?â
âYes.â
âThis is Tito, the maintenance manager at Nevis Aero Services.â
âYes, Tito?â
âWeâre just about done with the annual on your airplane. You need a new set of spark plugsâIâd suggest the platinum onesâand your starboard main gear tire is pretty close to needing replacing.â
âThe platinum plugs are fine, and go ahead and replace the tire. Do you have a replacement from the same manufacturer of the other two?â
âYes, sir; theyâre Goodyears, and we stock those. Will you be picking up the airplane when weâre done? It should be ready tomorrow.â
âWhatâs the bill going to come to?â
âA little under three thousand.â
âCharge it to the credit card number I gave you, and leave a copy of the bill on the seat. Iâve rented hangar number four, so put the airplane in there and lock it up. The combination on the lock is 4340.â
âYes, sir; itâll be in there by tomorrow night.â
âThank you, Tito.â
âLet us know if you need anything else.â
âWill do.â
Teddy hung up and continued driving. Less than a minute passed before the phone vibrated again. âYes?â
âMr.
