absolutely beautiful.”
“Thank you very much. We love it here.” Carl squinted, fine lines crinkling around his hazel eyes. He swept a wiry arm toward the wooden cabins dotting the clearing to their right. “Sunset Rock is just over that way, beyond that stand of firs. See that mound of rock sticking up?”
Shading his eyes, Sam gazed in the direction Carl indicated. “Yes, I see it.”
“You can’t tell from here, but there’s a really wide, flat place on the western side of the rock, and that’s where everyone goes to watch the sunset.” Carl planted his hands on his hips and beamed. “Be sure to bring your cameras. Trust me, you’ll want to get pictures.”
“I’m on it.” Dean plopped into the chair beside Bo’s and put his feet up on the deck rail. “Bo, you and Sam just sit on the rock looking photogenic, I’ll take the pictures.”
Sam laughed. “Suits me.”
“Me too.” Shooting Dean a quick grin, Bo twisted in his seat to talk to Lex, who still stood behind him on the deck. “Lex, I know you and Carl have things you need to do. You’d said something about having one of your employees show us around?”
“Yes. I think Anne’s free this afternoon, isn’t she, Carl?”
Carl nodded. “She’s inside reading. I’ll go get her.”
“Thanks, honey.” Rising on tiptoe, Lex gave her husband a kiss. “I’m heading to the kitchen. Jerome and Sandra need my help with dinner. The kitchen’s just inside the dining hall, please come get me there if you need me.”
“Sure thing. Thanks, Lex.” Sam waved at Lex as she hurried down the steps, then moved to stand behind Bo’s chair. Leaning down, he brushed a light kiss across the top of Bo’s head. “I wish we could be here without a case to work on. This is a hell of a vacation spot.”
“It sure is.” Bo tilted his head back to smile at Sam. “Maybe we’ll come back one day, huh?”
“I’d like that,” Sam answered, stroking Bo’s braid.
“Oh my God, you two are the best couple ever,” Dean sighed, a faraway look in his eyes. “I am so taking pictures of y’all watching the sunset together tonight.” Bo chuckled. “You’re such a romantic, Dean.”
Behind them, the wooden door creaked open. Sam straightened up before Bo could shrug him off. Turning around, he saw a tall, shapely young woman with a cap of rich brown curls and a wide smile walking out of the office.
“Hi, I’m Anne Tallant,” she said, holding out a slender, calloused hand. “Carl asked me to show y’all around the Lodge.”
Sam took her hand and shook. “Nice to meet you, Anne. I’m Sam Raintree.”
Dean jumped up from his chair and took Anne’s hand the second Sam released it. “Dean Delapore.” Dean flashed his most flirtatious smile. “Charmed.”
She laughed, warm brown eyes shining. “Hi, Dean.”
Pushing himself out of the rocking chair, Bo hobbled around to take his turn at shaking Anne’s hand. “I’m Bo Broussard. Thanks for taking the time to show us the property, Anne. We really appreciate it.”
“No problem. The Lodge is great, I love showing it off.” She nodded toward their backpacks, which lay against the wall of the office. “I can take you to your cabins on the way, if you want.”
Bo smiled at her. “That’d be great, thanks.”
“Okay, cool.” She stuck her hands in the back pockets of her jeans and pulled out a key attached to an orange plastic star. “Do y’all need help with your stuff?”
“No thank you,” Bo answered. “We can get it.”
She bit her lip. “You sure? Carl said you’d hurt your leg or something, Bo. I can carry stuff for you if you want, it’s no trouble.”
A muscle in Bo’s jaw twitched. He opened his mouth to say something—probably, Sam figured, to tell Anne he’d hiked all the way up the mountain with his pack on his back and could damn well carry the thing to the cabin—when Dean cut him off.
“Bo won’t say so, but his leg’s hurting from the climb. He had major surgery on it just two months ago.” Sidling closer to Anne, Dean laid a slightly-more-thanfriendly hand on her shoulder. “If you could just carry his pack, that would be awesome.”
A pretty pink flush crept into Anne’s cheeks. She returned Dean’s smile. “Sure thing, Dean.”
Sam glanced at Bo. The man’s expression was blank, but his dark eyes snapped with frustration. To Sam’s relief, Bo kept whatever he was thinking to himself. Sam really didn’t want to have to point out that a re-injury now could
