back in Winterfell for your own safety. Three of my men were cut down like dogs not a league from where we sit, and what does Robert do? He goes
hunting.â
Arya was chewing at her lip in that disgusting way she had. âCan we take Syrio back with us?â
âWho cares about your stupid
dancing master?â
Sansa flared. âFather, I only just now remembered, I
canât
go away, Iâm to marry Prince Joffrey.â She tried to smile bravely for him. âI love him, Father, I truly truly do, I love him as much as Queen Naerys loved Prince Aemon the Dragonknight, as much as Jonquil loved Ser Florian. I want to be his queen and have his babies.â
âSweet one,â her father said gently, âlisten to me. When youâre old enough, I will make you a match with a high lord whoâs worthy of you, someone brave and gentle and strong. This match with Joffrey was a terrible mistake. That boy is no Prince Aemon, you must believe me.â
âHe
is!â
Sansa insisted. âI donât want someone brave and gentle, I want
him
. Weâll be ever so happy, just like in the songs, youâll see. Iâll give him a son with golden hair, and one day heâll be the king of all the realm, the greatest king that ever was, as brave as the wolf and as proud as the lion.â
Arya made a face. âNot if Joffreyâs his father,â she said. âHeâs a liar and a craven and anyhow heâs a stag, not a lion.â
Sansa felt tears in her eyes. âHe is
not!
Heâs not the least bit like that old drunken king,â she screamed at her sister, forgetting herself in her grief.
Father looked at her strangely.
âGods,â
he swore softly, âout of the mouth of babes â¦â He shouted for Septa Mordane. To the girls he said, âI am looking for a fast trading galley to take you home. These days, the sea is safer than the kingsroad. You will sail as soon as I can find a proper ship, with Septa Mordane and a complement of guards â¦Â and yes, with Syrio Forel, if he agrees to enter my service. But say nothing of this. Itâs better if no one knows of our plans. Weâll talk again tomorrow.â
Sansa cried as Septa Mordane marched them down the steps. They were going to take it all away; the tournaments and the court and her prince, everything, they were going to send her back to the bleak grey walls of Winterfell and lock her up forever. Her life was over before it had begun.
âStop that weeping, child,â Septa Mordane said sternly. âI am certain your lord father knows what is best for you.â
âIt wonât be so bad, Sansa,â Arya said. âWeâre going to sail on a galley. It will be an adventure, and then weâll be with Bran and Robb again, and Old Nan and Hodor and the rest.â She touched her on the arm.
âHodor!â
Sansa yelled. âYou ought to marry Hodor, youâre just like him, stupid and hairy and ugly!â She wrenched away from her sisterâs hand, stormed into her bedchamber, and barred the door behind her.
EDDARD
âP ain is a gift from the gods, Lord Eddard,â Grand Maester Pycelle told him. âIt means the bone is knitting, the flesh healing itself. Be thankful.â
âI will be thankful when my leg stops throbbing.â
Pycelle set a stoppered flask on the table by the bed. âThe milk of the poppy, for when the pain grows too onerous.â
âI sleep too much already.â
âSleep is the great healer.â
âI had hoped that was you.â
Pycelle smiled wanly. âIt is good to see you in such a fierce humor, my lord.â He leaned close and lowered his voice. âThere was a raven this morning, a letter for the queen from her lord father. I thought you had best know.â
âDark wings, dark words,â Ned said grimly. âWhat of it?â
âLord Tywin is greatly wroth about the men you sent after Ser Gregor Clegane,â the maester confided. âI feared he would be. You will recall, I said as much in council.â
âLet him be wroth,â Ned said. Every time his leg throbbed, he remembered Jaime Lannisterâs smile, and Jory dead in his arms. âLet him write all the letters to thequeen he likes. Lord Beric rides beneath the kingâs own banner. If Lord Tywin attempts to interfere with the kingâs justice, he will have Robert to answer to. The only thing
