Angels of Darkness
side while she patrolled her territory, and sheâd do the same here with him. Partners, of a sort . . . and sheâd love to hunt with him.
âHow did you like it?â
âIt was the worst trip Iâve taken,â he said, squeezing her heart almost to nothing. âThere I was, hot, odors all around meâfrom the food, the flowers, the peopleâand color everywhere. I spent three days walking through the jungle, the cities, flying across the plains. I couldnât appreciate a damn bit of it. Because Iâd done a good job of putting you out of my head, but there . . . I only wondered whether youâd walked the same roads before. I wondered what you thought when you saw something, how your perception would be different from mine. I wondered what youâd say. And so I spent the whole trip wishing you were with me.â
Her heart filled again, too fast. She blinked away the stinging in her eyes. âWhen you come again, Iâll tell you what I see.â
âGood. Now ask if Iâll do much more than kiss you tonight.â
Heâd better. âWill you?â
âNo,â he said, but disappointment couldnât touch her, not when his eyes glowed so intensely green. He wanted to. That mattered more. âBecause as it stands now, that list of mine begins and ends with you. I donât mind keeping it that way.â
Only her. Astonishment roiled into fierce possession. Only hers.
And it was stupid, so stupidâbut she was glad of it. Sheâd been the only one to mean something to him. She wished heâd been happier in his life, that he hadnât been lonely, but if this was how theyâd ended up . . . Radha wasnât sorry that it had been her.
âSo Iâll kiss you, but I donât want to rush to the bed. I want you to be sure of me first. Absolutely sure,â he emphasized when she opened her mouth. âThat takes more than a few hours, and Iâd prefer to wait than to see you hurt, if you realize you made a mistake. And on my end . . . I want to savor you. I want to find out what you like a little bit at a time, learn every inch of you. Even if that means a year passes before Iâm inside you again.â
A year of waiting? Oh, no. She wouldnât survive the frustration. âIâll die. Youâll kill me.â
His grin killed her. âItâll be fun.â
Yes, it would be. Because sheâd tease the hell out of him in return, and she loved doing that. She loved the way he took it.
âNow ask me if Iâll see that youâre satisfied tonight, and every night while weâre building up to it,â he said. âUnless Iâm misreading youâand after you leave, you donât plan to come back, and you donât want me to visit you there.â
Satisfied. Her anticipation mounted. âYouâre not misreading me.â
âGood.â Despite the relief in his reply, his tension increased. âNow Iâve got a question. What are you here for? Are you hiding? Tell me how to help you.â
He still thought she was in trouble? And he wanted to fix it for her. God, that was so hot. Confidence, strength, and protection, in one sexy package.
âIâm not hiding. I saw you in Caelum last week, and I was worried about you.â
âYou were?â Clearly taken aback, he shook his head. âWhy?â
âBecause you looked like you thought the world was ending.â
His surprise rolled into a laugh. âAh. It feels like that sometimes.â
âBut you donât really think it will?â
âNot as long as Iâm standing.â
Not arrogance, just an intention to fight to the end and come out on top. God, that was sexy, too. And it was exactly what she planned to do.
He studied her face, as if gauging her through this new perspective. âYou know Iâm all right.â
âYes.â
And getting better. A lot better, as soon as he kissed her. If he didnât soon, sheâd take matters into her own hands.
âSo youâre done here. You could leave,â he said.
âYes.â
âBut you havenât.â His fingers clenched on the counterâs edge again, hard enough to crack the tile. âRadha, when I kiss youâIâm assuming you want me to. Iâll assume thatâs true until you tell me itâs not. You understand that? I canât hold back with you. Iâm only doing it now because
