like, and he backhanded her. Shortly after that, they got back together, and he pushed her so hard she fell and hit her head. That was the reason they broke up the second time.”
Alice gave Snow a quick look out of the corner of her eye. Returning her gaze to Erin, she said, “Laura was involved with him for two years. That was the first time he struck her?”
“The first I know of. But who knows.”
    “That’s quite a while.”
“There could have been other times that I didn’t know about. This time there was a bruise on the side of her face she couldn’t cover up. She had to tell me about it. Besides, it takes some men a long time to show their true colors. Obviously, he’d been holding his frustrations inside until they came boiling to the surface.”
“What sort of frustrations?” Alice said.
Erin began moving her hands in front of herself for emphasis. “Kevin Miller is a control freak. Laura Roberts was a free spirit. She refused to be controlled.”
    “Controlled in what way?”
“Told what she could do with her free time, where she could go, and who with. He wanted marriage and kids. She wasn’t interested in that yet.”
“The time he hit her—what led up to it? Do you know?”
Her face began to flush. She waved her hands some more. “Laura and I went out for drinks after work one night. We ended up here and had a few more. She was clearly too far gone to drive home, so she sent Kevin a text message saying she’d spend the night here. A half hour later, he called. He’d been asleep and woke up, realized she wasn’t home yet, and called her. He didn’t want her spending the night anywhere but in his bed, so he offered to come and pick her up. It was already three in the morning. She refused. They argued, and she hung up and turned off her phone. When she got home later that morning, he started in on her again. They argued. He smacked her.”
“Erin,” Snow said, “a lot of people hit each other with their hands. Sometimes they throw things. But that’s nothing close to the violence required to kill someone. Do you think Kevin Miller is capable of hitting someone in the head with a baseball bat?”
Keeping her eyes on Alice, Erin took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “I have no doubt that he killed Laura. He finally realized he could never have her again—so he gave up and knocked her head into the next world. Maybe he regretted it after he did it. But I imagine for an instant, he must have enjoyed it.”
“Okay,” Alice said. “Shifting gears here, we’d like to ask you about Andrew Tully. How would you describe his relationship with Laura?”
Erin’s face wrinkled into a deep frown. “Andrew and Laura? They had no relationship. Andrew is engaged to Crystal. They’re getting married in May.”
“We know that,” Alice said. “But we’ve taken a look at Laura’s recent cell phone record, and we noticed that Andrew and Laura made quite a few calls to each other leading right up until Laura’s death. Since Andrew is engaged to Crystal, doesn’t that seem strange to you?”
Erin’s eyes widened. Her tongue moved out between her lips, stayed there for a second, and then moved back in. “I don’t know anything about that,” she said. “You’ll have to ask Andrew.”
“We did,” Snow said. “He told us he and Crystal were having problems. That he was confiding in Laura.”
Erin turned her head toward Snow. Glaring at him, she said, “Well, there’s your answer.”
“More than thirty phone calls in a two-week period,” Snow said. “That’s a lot of confiding.”
She stared hard at Snow. “So you believe men and women who aren’t dating, or married, only call each other when they’re interested in an illicit fuck.”
Snow thought about that for a moment. With a hangdog look on his face, he cleared his throat and looked at Alice. “You have any more questions for Ms. Potter, Alice?”
Alice grinned at him. “I think that about covers it for now.”

Outside Erin Potter’s front door, on the way to the car, Alice chuckled and turned her head to Snow. “You sure you don’t know that woman from somewhere, Jim?”
“Positive,” Snow said. “Jesus, she acts like she’s one of my ex-wives. I don’t understand where the animosity was coming from. She was all over you .”
“Maybe she picked up some bad vibes you were putting out.”
“What bad vibes?” Snow said. “I was nice and friendly, like I always am. She must not like
