Death Echo
were equally light on their feet.
Equally deadly.
Even Harrow moved well. For a desk flyer, he kept himself fit. He had put on a blue wool blazer before leaving the boat, but hadnât fastened it. The gun in his shoulder harness flashed in and out of view. As he approached, Mac saw the telltale crease in his smooth hair that indicated he was wearing a nearly invisible com unit.
Like a street walker jiggling her assets, Mac thought sardonically. Letting everyone know who has what.
âYouâre late,â Harrow said to Emma.
âChasing electrons eats time,â she said.
âIf you donât believe us, ask your tech specialist,â Mac offered. Harrow gave him a sweeping look, then concentrated on Emma. âOur locator says youâre still in Discovery Harbor, Campbell River.â
âYour locator is. We arenât.â
Harrowâs blue eyes narrowed. âOne of your problems, Cross, is that youâve never been as funny as you think you are.â
âCould be your sense of humor,â Mac said.
Harrow shot him a cold look. âYour problem, MacKenzie, is that you donât have a sense of humor at all.â
âYeah, I never learned to laugh at the sight of blood and flying body parts.â
âWhere is Blackbird ?â Harrow demanded of Emma.
âWhy do you care?â she asked.
âDonât fuck with me.â
âNo worries,â she drawled. âI donât like sloppy seconds.â
Color blazed along Harrowâs high cheekbones.
Mac discovered his sense of humor. He laughed out loud. Then he bent and brushed a loverâs kiss along Emmaâs neck.
âEase up, babe,â he said too softly to be overheard. âHeâs going to stroke out on us.â
âIâll savor the possibility.â
âYou still donât get it, do you, Cross?â Harrow said with icy calm. âNo matter how you swing that sexy ass, at the end of the day Iâm still boss. You arenât.â
âYou missed the part where you tell her that sheâs in trouble and all you want to do is help,â Mac said.
Harrow shot him a surprised look.
âI took Advanced Interrogation 101,â Mac said. âThe first rule is that itâs never your cock on the line. Just the oppositionâs. Otherwise you lose control of the interrogation.â
Harrow took a slow breath and nodded curtly. âIâm glad youâre on our side.â
âWonât work,â Emma said. âHe graduated Divide and Conquer at the head of his class.â
âYou always were tooââ Harrow began.
âQuick for you,â she finished. She looked at Mac. âTim and I have radically different views of the world and the people in it.â
âTalk to me,â Mac said.
âThatâs just one of the many things I love about you,â she said. âYou listen. Tim, however, is âonâ all the time, a handsome icon of the modern warrior diplomat, with skills and instincts that are both smooth and honed. We dated for a time, were engaged for two weeks. Then I walked in and found him polishing his desk with an associateâs naked ass.â She shrugged. âWe got un-engaged real quick.â
âNo harm, no foul?â Mac asked, cutting across Harrowâs attempt to talk.
âPretty much. I was mad for, oh, half an hour. Then I was relieved.â
âSo Harrow is a walking, talking nation,â Mac said. âHe doesnât have friends, he has interests.â
Emma laughed with delight. âNailed it. And him.â
âIf youâre finished with the lame comedy routine,â Harrow said, âweâll go aboard the Solstice, get comfortable, and talk.â
âNo,â Mac and Emma said as one.
âThis fly ainât strolling into no spidery parlor,â she added.
âWe could be overheard out here,â Harrow said impatiently.
âIf youâre worried about somebody lurking on that little islet over there with a parabolic microphone, forget it,â Mac said. He jerked a thumb over his shoulder. âThe sound of the cascade trumps any listening device.â
Harrow put his fists on his hips, bringing the shoulder harness into full display as he got in Macâs face.
The shadow wearing a wind jacket and an Uzi drifted closer.
âListen, ass clown,â Harrow said, âI donât have time for this. I donât even have
