enough that he could feel Joey’s hands sliding over his chest and around to his bare back.
“Robbie.”
“Don’t stop.” If he stopped, then this would be over, and he didn’t want it to end. He felt Joey’s lips soften and pull away, but he could still feel his hot breath on his skin and hear soft panting that mirrored his own.
“I can’t do this to you. You’re beautiful and I’m….”
“You’re what?”
“I’m so ugly.”
Robbie raised his hands to Joey’s face and felt smooth skin, then wetness. He ran his hand over Joey’s cheek and back through his hair. “You feel beautiful to me.”
He heard Joey’s breath hitch and a soft sniffle. His lips were taken again as fingers wound their way through his hair. He wanted… for the first time in his life, he knew what it felt like to want another person so badly he’d rather give up breathing than stop kissing.
“Robbie, we need to leave soon.” Eli’s voice calling up the stairs broke them out of their desire-induced daze. Joey kissed him one last time and stepped away.
“I need my shirt and can’t find it.”
He heard Joey begin looking through his closet. “I don’t know.
I think you’d be the talk of the evening if you went without one.” He heard Joey chuckle.
“It’d be a little nipply… I mean nippy.” He chuckled as well as his shirt was placed in his hand. Robbie slipped it on, and he shivered as Joey helped him with his cufflinks, fingers lingering on his hand.
“Here’s your tie and jacket.”

Robbie put them on and sat on the edge of the bed, Rex scooting closer for a scratch. “Are my socks the right color? I once wore white socks to a performance. Can you say ‘Which violinist is blind?’”
“Your socks are fine.” Joey continued chuckling.
Robbie slipped on his shoes and felt Joey kiss him again. “I need to get ready too. I’ll be right back.” He heard Joey leave the room and got up to begin making his way downstairs when his mama alarm went off again. “I’m getting ready for a performance, and I have to leave soon. Can I call you later?”
“I just called to wish you a good performance and to make sure everything was okay.”
“Everything’s fine, Mama.” He couldn’t keep some of his exasperation out of his voice. Her three times a day calls were starting to get on his nerves. After all, he wasn’t a child. “I’ll call you later. I don’t want to be late.” Their calls were becoming shorter and shorter. There was never anything new to tell her because she called too often.
He heard a soft beeping on the line. “Okay, honey.” Now she was in a hurry because she had another call. Hanging up the phone, he turned it off and slipped it in his pocket as he heard footsteps approach the room.
“Shall we go?” Joey’s hand touched his arm, and he could immediately feel the heat through his shirt and jacket.
Carrying his cane, he let Joey lead him to Geoff’s large car, climbing in what he assumed was the back seat. Doors closed, and his violin was placed on his lap just before he felt the car begin to move. Voices and conversation swirled around him as they rode the short distance.

The car stopped moving, and Robbie heard car doors opening and felt a now familiar hand on his arm.
“I’ll help you inside.” Arie’s voice rang in his ears, and Robbie wanted so badly to tell him that Joey could do it, but practical concerns won out. He and Arie were going to the same place, after all.
Going with Arie, he followed his friend’s instructions silently, wishing that it was Joey’s hand on his arm and his voice in his ear.
Reaching the backstage area, he sat down his case and got out his instrument, tuned it, and sat down to wait. Arie sat next to him like he usually did, talking about the music and whatnot. Robbie barely listened. He was still angry with Arie, but he knew his friend was just concerned about him. He turned to him and almost opened his mouth to apologize, but stopped himself. He wasn’t going to say he was sorry for standing up for himself. “We should go.” The words cut through Robbie’s thoughts, and he got to his feet and followed Arie out front.
He could feel the heat from the lights as he walked out the door onto the stage. “Thank you.” He received a reassuring touch and sat down.
