Lupi 04 - Night Season
her?â
âYou think it isnât for the rest of us?â Cynna broke off a bite and popped it in her own mouth. âWhoâs Jenek?â
âGanâs been staying with his family.â
âHeâs my minder,â Gan said, and ran her tongue over her teeth to get the last of the chocolate.
A gnome, then. There was a lot Cynna didnât know about gnomes, but sheâd bet she knew something the others didnât. âIs that what you are nowâa gnome? Or what you will be, when you finish your transformation?â
Gan shrugged. âCanât be a demon with a soul, can I? I havenât decided which family Iâll marry with yet, butâ¦â Her features squinched up in a suspicious frown. âI think you arenât supposed to know about that.â
âI used to be Msaidizi. I know a lot of things demons know, and they know where gnomes came from.â
âWhatâs a mizzay-dizzy?â
âDemon rider.â Among other things, not all of them bad.
âOh. Well, donât tell anyone. I want to watch television,â Gan announced, turning to Lily. âWhereâs your television?â
âUpstairs. Iâll show you. Do you know how to order pay-per-view?â
âNo. Whatâs that?â
âGood. Come on.â
Cynna grinned as Lily and her orange sidekick left the room. âItâs like raising the demon child from hell, isnât it? Literally. Bet youâre glad Toby isnât here right now.â
Ruleâs eyes widened. âGod, yes. I hadnât thought of that. I may have nightmaresâ¦Cynna, how did you guess that Gan was becoming a gnome?â
âIâm not supposed to tell. Got any candy?â
âGan cleaned me out,â he said dryly.
âYour creditâs good. Hereâs the big secret, passed on to me by a demon I knew in my bad old days: gnomes started out as demons. Not all of themâI mean, theyâre a separate race now and have children and all that, so most of the ones alive today were born as gnomes. But thatâs where gnomes come fromâdemons who for some reason developed souls.â
Rule shook his head. âThat explains why Max took Gan to his people, but Iâmâ¦amazed. Max hates demons. He says all gnomes hate demons.â
âGuess humans arenât the only ones with parent issues.â
His mouth twitched. âI guess not. Cynnaâ¦â The timer dinged. He turned to slip on a mitt, then opened the oven.
Harry lifted his head, sniffed, and jumped down to stalk over to the stove, where he announced his willingness to sample chicken enchiladas.
âYouâre right, Harry. That smells fantastic.â Cynna heaved a theatrical sigh. âThe manâs good in bed and he cooks, too. If only Lily were a little less conventional! Threesomes arenât that unusual these days.â
Rule slid the glass casserole onto a cooling rack. âI ought to take you up on that just to see how high you jump and how fast you run.â
âHey, youâre supposed to pretend you donât know I donât mean it.â She didnât, not anymore, which made the flirting comfortable. The mate bond really did change everything, even the vaunted lupus distaste for fidelity.
Of course, she now knew where that distaste came from, why they were taught that sexual possessiveness was wrong and marriage was forbidden. Cynnaâs good mood evaporated. Unconsciously, she touched her stomach.
Rule studied her. âYouâre thinking about going to Edge, arenât you?â
She wrenched her thoughts back on topic. âYeah. If they can get me there, Iâm going. If youâre worried about Lilyââ
âIâm worried about you.â
And that was the first thing sheâd noticed about Rule, way back when. He cared. âIâm not buying into their story about Daniel Weaver all the way, but I thinkâ¦well, thinking isnât good enough. I have to know. It, uh, it sounds like you donât plan to go there yourself.â Which gave her a queasy feeling. Sheâd assumed theyâd all go.
âI canât.â
âButâ¦â Her voice trailed away. Sheâd been so busy avoiding thinking about her own stuff, she hadnât given any thought to other peopleâs problems. Again. âThe mantles.â
He nodded grimly.
Rule had been tricked into assuming the heirâs
