Lupi 04 - Night Season
not,â she said at last. âIâd feel guilty if I hit you and even madder if I didnât. So you havenât learned anything yet about the shield spell?â
He knew what she was doingâdistracting him with talk of spellcraft. It would probably work. He retrieved his crutch and swung around to resume their trek through the trees, going slowly so she could keep up. âVery little, aside from the physical components. I do know itâs a drawn spell.â
âRight up my alley.â
He grinned at the casualness of her voice. âYouâll get a look at it. Iâm not so egotistical I canât ask for expert advice. Speaking of which, Iâve suggested that Ruben bring in Sherry and her bunch.â Suggested might be a euphemism, but he thought blackmailed would overstate the case. Required? Yes, thatâs the word he wanted. Heâd required Ruben to ask Sherry and her coven to perform a particular task. âTheyâll need your snazzy new coat.â
âAre you talking about Sherry OâShaunessy?â Disbelief coated Cynnaâs voice. Sherry OâShaunessy was high priestess of a very old, very powerful Wiccan coven who occasionally consulted for the Unit. âI canât believe you called them in. You donât play well with others, and you donât like sharing your toys. And what would they need my coat for?â
âIt isnât my spell to share or not, is it? Iâm not paying for it. But Sherry and company arenât going to be learning the shield spell, at least not right away. Theyâll be casting personal protection spells. Yours goes on your coat.â
âIâve got a protection spell.â
âSpeaking of egotisticalâ¦â
âAll right, all right. Sherryâs coven can undoubtedly put lots more zip into spells than I can on my own. But why? Isnât the whole point of a shield spell protection?â
âYouâre assuming itâs really a shield spell.â
âIâm not assuming anything, but odds are that it is. And youâll be able to tell once you see it, right?â
âItâs a drawn spell,â Cullen reminded her. âWill a spell from another realm use glyphs weâre familiar with?â
âSome of them, butâ¦okay, okay, youâre right. We canât expect to recognize all of the graphic components, so youâll be relying on the gnomeâs explanations of the glyphs. Which may not be complete, and could be nonsense.â She brooded on that a moment. âStill, the gnome and the others will be in the circle with us, and Iâm guessing they donât want to go boom. â
âI doubt the spell causes physical harm. But think how handy it would be for a diplomat negotiating trade agreements to cast a good persuasion spell.â
She did, apparently, think that over, keeping silent as they emerged from the softness of leaves and loam onto a paved path. There was plenty of room to walk side by side here; the trees lining the path had been knocked down and shoved into untidy piles.
âWhat in the worldâ?â Cynna stopped, looking at the woody debris.
âMika likes this path.â
âI guess he needs a little more room than we do.â
âA little. Come on.â
They started down the path. Cullen missed having her hand snugged in his jeans, but she must have been able to see well enough, now that they werenât under the trees.
For him, the world was drawn in crisp grays with pools of ebony shadows. What did it look like to her? His first Change was so many miles and years and heartaches agoâ¦he couldnât call up a clear sensory memory of how the night looked back when heâd had merely human eyes.
âOkay,â Cynna said at last, âhereâs how I see it. If the councilor tries something sneaky, you wonât be affected because of your personal shields, but he doesnât know about them. But Lily wouldnât be affected either, and sheâd probably be able to tell at a touch if any of us were. And the Edge people do know that. They know sheâs a touch sensitive.â
âWhich makes it unlikely theyâll pull something, but not impossible.â
âOh, come on. Iâm all for taking reasonable precautions, butââ
âDammit, Cynna!â Suddenly angry, he spun. âReasonable precautions? Youâre carrying my child. Have you forgotten
