Mercy Thompson 01-05 - THE MERCY THOMPSON COLLECTION
charge?â
I gave him a suspicious look. âWhat do you mean by that?â
âI mean just what I said. When we go out, you pick where weâre going. If we kissâor anything elseâitâll be because you started it. That way, even if you want to submit to me, you canât because Iâm not asking anything.â
I crossed my arms over my chest and stared hard at the river. âLet me think about it.â
âFair enough. So, do you want to tell me what you were doing in Benton City?â
âHunting.â
He sucked in a deep breath. âYou wonât find him that way.â
âFind whom?â I asked innocently.
âThe vampire. Andre. You wonât find him that way. They have ways of confusing their scent and magic to hide their daytime resting places even from other vampires. Thatâs why Warren and Ben couldnât track Littleton down when they went looking.â
âTheir magics donât work so well on me,â I told him.
âAnd you can talk to ghosts that the rest of us canât see,â he snapped impatiently. âWhich is why Marsilia sent you after Littleton.â He was still mad at me for doing that, even if, maybe especially because , it had worked. âHow long have you been looking for Andre? Since Marsilia let him go?â
I didnât give him an answer. Didnât want to give him an answer. It occurred to me that this was the first time Iâd felt myself in his presence since weâd gone on our first date. Maybe it was the vampire blood.
âWhat did I do to deserve that look?â he asked.
âWhy donât I feel like obeying you now?â I asked.
He smiled at me and turned onto the bypass highway that ran along the outskirts of Richland. It was four thirty and the road was clogged with traffic.
âBeing the Alpha is different from just being dominant,â he said.
I snorted. âI know that. Remember where I grew up.â
âIf Iâm away from the pack, I can make the Alpha go dormant. Bran can do it whenever he feels like it, but for the rest of us, it takes real effort.â
I donât know how he expected me to react to that, but it didnât make me happy. âSo it was deliberate, the way you made me feel?â
He shook his head, and I let out the breath I hadnât realized Iâd been holding. I donât like being manipulated at all, and being manipulated by paranormal means is worse.
âNo. I told you it takes an effortâand theâ¦effect you have on me makes it difficult.â He wasnât looking at me now. He was a product of his times. He might look like he was in his late twenties, but heâd been born just after WWII, and a man raised in the 1950âs didnât talk about his feelings. It was interesting watching him squirm. I was suddenly feeling much more cheerful.
âI canât help how Iâm wired,â he said after a moment. âI donât even know how much is being an Alpha werewolf and how much is just meâbut being around you brings out the predator in me.â
âAnd so you had to make me want to please you?â I made sure he heard how I felt about that.
âNo!â He sucked in a big breath and then said, âPlease donât antagonize me right now. You want an explanation. You want me to stop influencing you. Iâm trying to do bothâbut it isnât easy. Please.â
It was the âpleaseâ that got to me. I leaned my back against the door so I was as far from him as I could get. âTell me, then.â
âBran can control his Alpha effect until he can fool werewolves who donât know who and what he is. Iâm not so talented, but I can stuff it down so it doesnât interfere with my everyday life. When I negotiate contracts, I donât like to exert undue influence on the people Iâm dealing with. Even in the pack, I donât use it much. Cooperation is always better than coercionâespecially when that coercion only lasts until theyâre out of my presence. I only bring out the big guns when thereâs trouble in the pack that canât be solved by talking.â He glanced at me and almost hit the car in front of him when traffic stopped unexpectedly.
If my hearing hadnât been so good I wouldnât have heard him when he said, âWhen I am with you, my control is shot. I think thatâs what youâve been
