Mercy Thompson 01-05 - THE MERCY THOMPSON COLLECTION
back into your own skin.â
âI donât remember,â I said warily.
âGood,â said Samuel. âFortunately for us all, the mind has a way of protecting itself.â
âYou went from fully closed to fully open,â Adam said. âAnd when you opened yourself up to me, the mate bond settled in, too. Before I realized what happened you ...â He waved his hands. âSort of spread out through the pack bonds.â
âLike Napoleon trying to take over Russia,â said Samuel âThere just wasnât enough of you to go around.â
I remembered a bit then. Iâd been swimming, drowning in memories and thoughts that werenât mine. Theyâd flowed over me, around me, and through me like a river of iceâstripping me raw as the shards passed by. It had been cold and dark; I couldnât breathe. Iâd heard Adam calling my name ...
âAurielle answered,â reported Ben from the hallway. âShe says Darryl is fine. Warrenâs not picking up, so I called his boy toyâs cell. Boy will check up and call me back.â
âI bet you didnât call him a boy toy to his face,â I said.
âYou can effing believe I did,â answered Ben with injured dignity. âYou should have heard what he called me.â
Kyle, Warrenâs human boyfriend, who in his day job was a barracuda divorce lawyer, had a tongue that could be as razor-sharp as his mind. Iâd bet money on the outcome of any verbal skirmish between Kyle and Ben, and it wouldnât be on Ben.
âIs Dad all right?â asked Jesse. The wolves moved aside almost sheepishly to let her throughâand I realized they must have kept her away while the matter was still in doubt. Judging by Adamâs eyes, he held on to control by a gnatâs hairâso keeping his vulnerable human daughter away had been a good idea. But I knew JesseâI wouldnât have wanted to have been the one keeping her back.
Adam got hastily to his feet and almost didnât lean on Mary Joâwhoâd put her hand out when he swayed.
âIâm just fine,â he told his daughter, and gave her a quick hug.
âJesseâs the one who called Samuel,â Mary Jo told him. âWe didnât even think of it. He told us what to do.â
âJesseâs the bomb,â I said with conviction. She gave me a shaky grin.
âThe trick,â Samuel said to me, âis to join with the pack and with Adamâwithout losing yourself in them. Itâs instinctive for the werewolves, but I expect youâre going to have to work on it.â

IN THE END, I WENT HOME FOR DINNER, SLIPPING OUT ALMOST unnoticed in the gathering that followed our close call. I needed some time alone. Adam saw me leave, but made no move to stop meâhe knew Iâd be back.
There was a bowl of tuna fish, pickles, and mayo in the fridge, so I made a sandwich and fed what was left to the cat. As she ate with delicate haste, I called Kyleâs cell phone.
âUhmm?â
The sound was so relaxed, I pulled the phone away from my ears to make sure it was Kyleâs phone Iâd gotten. But there it was on the little screen-KYLEâs CELL.
âKyle? I was calling to see how Warren was.â
âSorry, Mercy,â Kyle laughed, and I heard water splash. âWeâre in the hot tub. Heâs fine. How are you? Ben said you were all right.â
âFine. Warren?â
âWas passed out in the hallway, where heâd evidently been headed to the kitchen with an empty glass.â
âWasnât empty when I was carrying it,â Warrenâs warm Southern-touched voice sounded amused.
âAh,â said Kyle, âI didnât notice much besides Warren. But he woke up in a few minutesââ
âCold water in your face does that,â observed Warren, amused.
âBut he was stiff and soreâthus the hot tub.â
âTell him Iâm sorry,â I told Kyle.
âNothinâ to be sorry for,â said Warren. âPack magic can be tricky sometimes. Thatâs what Adam, Darryl, and I are for, sweetheart. I donât feel you in the pack anymore. Problems?â
âProbably not,â I told him. âSamuel says I just burned out the circuit for a while. It should come back on line soon.â
âApparently it wasnât necessary that I pass anything on,â said Kyle dryly.
