Mercy Thompson 01-05 - THE MERCY THOMPSON COLLECTION
moments.â
âSo,â he said, âhave you given any thought to raising sheep?â
âNot at the present time,â I replied dryly. âNo.â
We walked a little more in companionable silence.
âI have some photos,â Bran said abruptly. âOf Bryan and Evelyn.â My werewolf foster family. âSome of your old school pictures, too, if you want them.â
âIâd like that,â I said.
He looked back toward Adamâs house, and I saw that someone else was headed over.
âLooks like youâve been missed. Iâll leave you alone.â He kissed my forehead and jogged off.
He met Adam at the barbed-wire fence, and Adam said something I couldnât quite hear that made Bran laugh.
âHey,â I said, as Adam approached me. His response was a blast of warmth that had me blushing.
âDo you have keys to your van?â he asked, his voice a dark caress that gave me goose bumps. He smelled of need and impatience.
âTheyâre in the van.â
âGood,â he said, taking my arm and walking briskly toward the pole barn that had survived the fire without a scorch mark. âIf I had to go get my truck, someone might notice us leaving. I have keys to Warrenâs apartment. He said the guest room has clean sheets.â
He stopped at the van. âI need to drive.â
Normally, Iâd have argued with him just on general principle, but sometimes, especially with Adam so intense that he was ready to explode, it was just better to give Alpha males their way. Without a word, I headed toward the passenger side of the van.
He didnât speed and he didnât talk. We made it to Richland without hitting a red light, but there our luck ran out.
âAdam,â I said gently, âif you break my steering wheel, weâll have to walk the rest of the way to Warrenâs house.â
He loosened his hands but didnât look at me. I put a hand on his thigh, and it vibrated under my palm.
â If you want to make it to Warrenâs,â he said, his voice almost guttural, âyouâll have to keep your hands to yourself.â
There is something incredibly arousing about being wanted . I pulled my hand back and sucked in a deep breath. âAdam,â I said.
The light turned green at last. I had the whimsical thought that my time in Elphame had completely skewed my internal clock, because I could have sworn we were there for hours instead of seconds.
Warren lived in an A house, one of a group of âAlphabet Housesâ built during World War II to accommodate the exploding population of nuclear-industry workers in Richland. The one he lived in was still a duplex. Both sides were darkâand the other duplex had a FOR RENT sign on the window.
Adam parked the van and slid out without looking at me. He closed the door with exquisite gentleness that said a lot about his state of mind. I got out and didnât even bother to worry about whether my prized Vanagon Syncro was lockedâwhich I suppose said equally as much about my state of mind.
Adam unlocked the door of Warrenâs apartment and held it open for me. As soon as we were both inside, he closed the door and locked it.
When he turned to face me, his eyes were bright gold and his cheeks were flushed. âIf you donât want this,â he told me, as he had since the . . . incident with Tim, âyou can say no.â
âRace you to the bedroom,â I said, and started for the stairs.
He caught my arm in a very careful grip before I took more than two steps. âRunning . . . would not be a good idea right now.â He was ashamed of his lack of control; maybe someone else would have missed it in his voice. Maybe I would have, too, if it werenât for the bond between us.
I put my hand over his and patted it. âOkay,â I said. âWhy donât you take me to bed?â
I hadnât been ready for him to grab me and pick me up that fast or I wouldnât have squeaked.
He froze.
âSorry,â I said. âIâm fine.â
He took me at my word and carried me to the stairs. I halfway expected him to run, but instead his pace was deliberate, his step almost heavy. The stairs were narrow and steep, and he was careful not to bang my head or feet.
He set me down just inside the guest bedroom and closed the door. He stood there, his back to me, breathing heavily.
âA month,â he said.
