Nobody's Fool
happened, a look of pure astonishment on his face. Also, he was embarrassed by the condition of his shirtfront.
âHeâs my best friend,â Sully explained, âbut heâs a little slow on the uptake.â
âYou never introduced me before,â Rub said.
âSure I have,â Sully said. âYou just forgot.â
âWell, I donât remember it,â Rub explained.
âThatâs what I just said,â Sully pointed out.
âIâd remember,â Rub insisted.
Sully nodded, grinning at him. âSay the Carnation Milk jingle.â
âI like tits best of all,â Rub began confidently, only to discover he was lost.
âArenât you going to say hi to Peter?â Sully suggested.
âHowdy, Sancho,â Peter said. âHi.â Rub scowled.
âWhy donât you grab the other end of that mattress?â Sully suggested. âRalph here looks pooped.â
âI am too,â Ralph admitted. âI donât have to do nothing to
get
pooped, either.â
âThatâs because youâre old,â Sully explained.
âIâm not as old as you, and you work all day.â
âActually, he watches us work,â Peter observed over his shoulder as he and Rub, whoâd begun to look a little pale again, carted the mattress past them toward the U-Haul.
âYou want a cup of coffee, Sully?â Ralph offered. âI got some made.â
âGood,â Sully said. âLetâs go inside and sit down and watch them work. Itâs cold out here.â
Ralph led the way. Will was in the kitchen drinking from a coffee cup, so Sully pulled up a chair next to his grandson. âWhatâs that?â
âHot chocolate.â
âI can make you that if you want,â Ralph offered.
âCoffeeâs fine,â Sully assured him.
âNo trouble,â Ralph said. âThe cocoaâs right here.â
âCoffeeâs fine.â
âTake me two minutes to heat the water, is all.â
âNo wonder Veraâs annoyed with you all the while,â Sully said. âBring me a cup of coffee.â
Ralph poured a cup from the coffee maker on the drain board. âYou want cream and sugar?â
âNo, I want coffee.â
âTheyâre right here,â Ralph said, indicating them and that it was no trouble.
Sully nudged Will. âI still donât have my coffee,â he said. âI could have drunk three cups by now.â
âHere,â Ralph said, setting the cup in front of Sully and pulling up a chair. âIâm glad you and your friend showed up. Now maybe itâll all bedone before Vera gets back from Schuyler. Thatâs the bed from the guest room theyâre loading, and sheâs going to have a kitten.â
âThey could take my bed,â Sully suggested.
âThen where would you sleep?â
âOn the couch. I donât sleep enough to bother anymore anyhow.â
âMe neither,â Ralph said sadly. âI bet Iâm up twenty times a night.â
âVera finds out you let Peter take that bed, and youâre going to be the one with no place to sleep.â
âI wish I hadnât been asleep last night,â he said. âWe were burglarized.â
âYouâre kidding.â
Ralph looked guilty. âJust the garage. Youâll never guess what they took.â
âYes, I will,â Sully warned him. âThey took the snowblower.â
âWas it you who did it?â Ralph said, slack-jawed with amazement.
âNo, but I know who did.â
âWho?â
âThe guy I stole it from. Donât worry. Iâll steal it back.â
Ralph shook his head, studied Will, who was taking all this in. âYour grandpa Sullyâs one of a kind, ainât he?â
Will looked back and forth between the two men, clearly unprepared to voice an opinion.
âYou want some more hot chocolate?â Ralph said.
Will shook his head.
âYou want a poke in the eye with a sharp stick?â Sully offered.
âYou donât have a stick,â Will pointed out.
âYou going to let your two grandpas visit you in your new apartment?â
âAnd Grandma Vera.â
âRight,â Sully said.
Peter and Rub came back through then. âJust the top mattress, and weâre set,â Peter said. âStep down, Sancho,â he reminded Rub.
âI know it,â Rub
