Only 06 - Winter Fire
near âem. My ma shot one of Abâs uncles from ambush for forcing hisself on me when I was twelve. Didnât kill him, sorry to say.â
Sarah looked as shocked as she felt.
âHe werenât the first,â Lola said, âor the last. Ma brung me into the business as a youngâun.â
The older woman shrugged and gave a gap-toothed smile.
âI only mention it,â she said, âsoâs you wonât go to nagging Conner for him doing whatâs got to be done to protect his own.â
âI donât want that for my brother,â she said with quiet desperation.
âMan does what heâs going to do, and women take the hindmost.â
Sarahâs mouth flattened. She wanted to argue but knew it was herself she was fighting with, not Lola.
To hell with firewood , Sarah thought harshly. Iâm looking for Spanish silver tomorrow and the day after and the day after that .
Iâll find it .
I have to .
âSpeakinâ of man doing and women taking,â Lola said, âyou looking to get big from more than you et?â
âExcuse me?â Sarah said, confused.
âYou do know where babes come from, donât you?â
âOf course I do.â
âThen do you want a youngâun or do you have something to keep you from catching?â
âItâs not a problem. Half of what I need to get pregnant is missing.â
âHell it is,â Lola retorted. âCase has just what you need, an itâs by God loaded for bear every time he looks at you.â
Sarah felt her cheeks getting hot as she remembered bathing Case when he was asleep.
He was indeed quite capable of getting her pregnant.
âHe wouldnât force me,â Sarah said tightly.
âHe wouldnât have to. Or ainât you figured that out yet?â
âWhat?â
The older woman threw up her hands.
âLong on book learning and short on female learning,â Lola said, disgusted.
Sarah didnât say a word.
âYou want Case,â Lola said flatly. âItâs plain as the nose on your face.â
âWhether I do or not,â she said in an even voice, âCase doesnât want me.â
âHorseshit.â
âPlease, donât useââ
âDonât go to chewing on me for speaking plain,â Lola interrupted curtly. âPlain speaking is downright needful unless you want to be breeding Caseâs babe. Do you?â
âIt doesnât matter. He wonât touch me that way.â
âHell, gal, they all say that whilst they put their pecker up your skirt.â
âCase hates wanting me,â Sarah said bluntly. âHe told me so.â
Lola blinked. âHow come?â
âHe doesnât want to feel anything.â
âOnly critter that donât feel nothing is a dead critter.â
Sarahâs smile was weary but real.
âCase doesnât mind feeling something toward the land,â she said. âItâs people he doesnât want to care about.â
âHuh.â
Lola pursed her weathered, wrinkled lips, reached into her pocket for a plug of chewing tobacco, and remembered where she was. She sighed.
âWell, makes no nevermind what a manâs two-eyed head wants,â the old woman said. âHis one-eyed head gets the last word.â
When Sarah figured out what Lola was saying, she couldnât help laughing.
âAinât you never heard it called that?â the older woman asked, grinning.
Sarah simply shook her head.
âFor a widow woman, you sure are green,â Lola said. âHow did you keep from gettinâ a big belly when your husband was alive? Or was he just too old?â
âPartly. Usually he was too drunk to run me to ground.â
Lolaâs big shoulders moved in silent laughter. Then she reached into a pants pocket, pulled out a small leather bag, and threw it.
Instinctively Sarah caught the bag. It weighed hardly anything.
âWhat is it?â she asked.
âBits of sponge. Case ainât no drinker and he ainât too old to plant kids in your belly.â
Sarah looked at the bag. âSo?â
âSo when you get to feeling randy, soak one of them bits in vinegar and put it where your monthlies comefrom. Poke it up as far as you can. Then go do what you got to.â
âI wonât get pregnant, is that what youâre saying?â
âOh, you might catch now anâ
