The Thanatos Syndrome
doesnât?â
âRead St. Paul! It is clear that their inability to accept Jesus was not only foreordained but altogether reasonable and is not to be held against them. Salvation comes from the Jews, as holy scripture tells us. They remain the beloved, originally chosen people of God.â
âRight. Now Iââ
âIt is also psychologically provable.â
âIt is?â
âJews are naturally skeptical, hardheaded, and, after all, what Jesus was proposing to them was a tall order.â
âYes. Wellââ Heâs standing on the trapdoor and I canât lift it until he gets off.
âWhat do you think Peres would say if Begin claimed to be the Messiah?â
I have to laugh.
âNo no.â The priest hunches forward, almost clearing the trapdoor. âYouâre missing the point.â
âI am?â
âHow many times in your work have you encountered someone who claims to be Napoleon, the Messiah, Hitler, the Devil?â
âOften.â
âHow often have you encountered a Jewish patient who claimed to be the Messiah or Napoleon?â
âNot often.â
âYou see?â
âYes.â
âNo, you donât.â
âI donât?â
âYou still donât see the bottom line psychologically speaking?â My nose has started running seriously. He is standing on the trapdoor and my nose is dripping.
âOne, a Jew will not believe another Jew making such a preposterous claim, right? ButâButâ!â Now he has come to the bottom line sure enough. For he has stopped doing isometrics and throwing punches and has instead placed both hands on the azimuth and lined me up in the sights. He speaks in a low intense voice, pausing between each word. âIs it not the case, Doctor, that if a Jew speaks to a Gentile, speaks with authority, with sobriety, as a friendâ the Gentile â will â believe â him! Think about it!â He has leaned over so close I can see the white fiber, the arcus senilis, around his pupil.
I give every appearance of thinking about it.
âEven an anti-Semite! Did you ever notice that an anti-Semite who despises Jews actually believes them deep downâthatâs why he hates them!âand isnât that the reason he despises them?â
I eye him curiously. âMay I ask you something, Father?â
âFire away.â
âDo you still regard yourself as a Catholic priest?â
For the first time he seems surprised. He stops his isometrics, cocks his head. âHow do you mean, Tom?â
âWhy are you?â
âWhy am I what? Oh. You mean why am I a CatholicâTom, may I ask you a question?â
âSure.â
âDo you remember what a sacrament is?â
I smile. âA sensible sign instituted by Christ to produce grace. I can still rattle it off.â
The priest laughs. âThose sisters did a job on us, didnât they?â
âYes. Maybe too good.â
âWhat? Oh. Yes, yes. Do you remember the scriptural example they always gave?â
âSure. Unless you eat my body and drink my blood, you will not have life in you.â
âSame one!â says the priest, again laughing, then falls to musing. âLife,â he murmurs absently and under his breath. âLife. But thatâs the trouble, the wordsââ
âWhatâs that?â I ask the priest, wondering if heâs still talking to me.
âOh,â he says, giving a start. âIâm sorry. To answer your questionââ He frowns mightily.
What question?
âAre you forgetting about the ancient Romans?â
The ancient Romans. My nose is running badly. I have to go.
âArenât you forgetting that the ancient Romans, who were, after all, not stupid people and were right about most things though not very creative, were also right about us.â
âI suppose I had forgotten.â
âThe historians say they mistook us for a Jewish sect, didnât they?â
âSure.â
âWas it a mistake?â
Now heâs clear of the trapdoor. I give the rung a yank.
âThe Jews as a word sign cannot be assimilated under a class, category, or theory. No subsuming Jews! Not even by the Romans.â
âRight.â I yank again. Whatâs wrong with this damn thing?
âNo subsuming Jews, Tom!â
âOkay, I wonât.â
âThis offends people, even the
