to see what happens tonight before I say anything.”
Dean gave him a sour look. “Tease.”
A wide grin smoothed the lines of anger and frustration from Bo’s face. “Call it what you want. I’m not talking until I have something to back me up.”
“Why not?” Sam asked, moving toward the door.
“Because I don’t want to influence yours or Dean’s observations.” Bo followed Sam to the door, giving Dean a wave. “I’ll see you in a couple of hours, Dean. You and Sam talk to some of the staff, if you get a chance. Find out precisely what they’ve seen, and precisely what days and times, if possible. I’d like to know if there’s any consistency in the timing of the sightings.”
Dean nodded. “Will do, boss.”
“Great, thank you.” Pulling the front door open, Bo walked out onto the deck, with Sam close behind.
Outside, the snow continued to fall, veiling the day in a still white silence. With no one around to see, Sam slipped his arm around Bo as they made their way down the steps.
“You’re still limping a little,” he explained in answer to Bo’s raised eyebrow. “Don’t want you to slip in the snow.”
Chuckling, Bo stepped off the last stair and into the snow covering the path. “In that case, I’m glad my leg’s still acting up, because I like your arm around me like this.”
Sam smiled, warmed by Bo’s words. “Me too. Though I’m still sort of worried about your leg.”
Bo was quiet for several seconds. “I’m worried too. It still isn’t hurting, exactly. But every time we go out to the woods, that weird jumpy feeling comes back. And this time it hasn’t entirely gone away. It still feels overly sensitive, though not as much as it did in the woods.”
Frowning, Sam pulled Bo closer. “I don’t like that at all, Bo. It sounds like what you’re feeling might be related to that bite after all.”
“I know.” Bo glanced sidelong at Sam. “I can’t help but think that something about the bite is reacting to the presence of a portal.”
Fear spiked cold and sharp through Sam’s bones. “So you think there really is a portal here?”
“Is, or was.” Bo’s arm slid around Sam’s waist as they neared their cabin. “Let’s not jump to conclusions, though. We’re still investigating. Let’s finish collecting evidence, then see what we have and draw our conclusions from that.”
“You’re right.” Forcing his worry to the back of his mind, Sam pulled the cabin key out of his jeans pocket. “We should probably sit down as a group tonight and go over what we have so far.”
“Good idea.”
Sam unlocked the cabin and pulled the door open. Leaning against the doorframe, Bo dragged Sam to him by the front of his jacket and planted a hard kiss on his mouth. Surprised, Sam let out a squeak. Bo laughed, slid a hand into Sam’s hair and kissed him again, taking it deep this time. Sam opened to him, enjoying the possibility of discovery nearly as much as the slide of Bo’s tongue against his. Contradictory, but true.
“Don’t think I’m complaining,” Sam murmured as they pulled apart, “but what was that for?”
Bo smiled, his thumb caressing Sam’s cheek. “Because I love you. And because that detective made me feel rebellious.”
“Someone might see us.”
“Who? We didn’t pass any of the staff on the way here, and all the guests are gone.” Bo thrust his hips against Sam’s. His eyes gleamed with a rare mischief which always managed to take Sam by surprise. “I wish I could bend you over the bed and fuck you blind right now. But those damn detectives might walk in on us.” Latching his mouth onto Sam’s neck, Bo sucked very gently for a second. “Of course, it’d be interesting to see whether or not Parsons’ expression changed.”
Sam laughed out loud. “Oh, I see. Detectives giving you attitude makes you feel rebellious, and feeling rebellious makes you horny. I’m going to have to remember that.”
“See that you do.” Bo licked the corner of Sam’s mouth. “Go on back and help Dean interview the staff. I’m going to organize our notes so far and plan out what to do next.”
“Okay.” Sam picked up Bo’s braid and let it run across his palm like a glossy black rope. He met Bo’s gaze. “I love you.”
The joyful shine in Bo’s eyes made Sam’s spirit sing. With one last swift press of lips, Bo stepped into the cabin and shut the door.
Hands in his pockets, Sam jumped back down the steps onto the path. He smiled up at the threatening
