What Hides Inside: Bay City Paranormal Investigations, Book 2
pancakes.”
“What makes you think I’m buying?” David asked as they headed toward the door.
“You invited me. Therefore, you’re buying. It’s the rules.” Tossing David his jacket, Dean pulled his own jacket on and zipped it up. “I just took this off. I’m not even thawed out yet.”
“Don’t worry, Princess, we’ll take my car.” David leaned over Cecile’s desk and kissed her. “See y’all later.”
Sam turned to Cecile as David and Dean left, Dean still complaining about the cold and David teasing him for it. “I guess we should wait a while before we go see the students.”
“Definitely.” Sliding open the bottom drawer of her desk, Cecile pulled out a sheet of paper with several names, addresses and phone numbers on it. “These are the students who’ve agreed to talk to us. They have their parents’ permission, we just need to call ahead before we go to see them.”
From the corner of his eye, Sam saw Bo lean against the wall and hook his thumbs in the front pockets of his jeans. He looked unbearably sexy. Sam had to fight back an urge to throw himself at Bo and kiss him until his lips bruised.
“Thanks for doing this,” Bo said softly.
“Just doing the job.” Sam flashed a quick smile at Bo. He hadn’t intended to let his sudden lust show, but the way Bo’s cheeks flushed told him he’d failed miserably at keeping it hidden.
“Um. Yeah.” Bo licked his lips, dark eyes flicking down to Sam’s mouth then back up again. “Okay, I, uh…I need to get back to the accounting stuff.”
Andre stared as Bo turned and walked rather stiffly back into his office, swinging the door shut behind him. “Okay,” he murmured, “is it just me, or is Bo acting very strange?”
Sam fought not to react. He shrugged and turned back to his partly finished list of interview questions, hoping the others wouldn’t think anything of his silence.
“It’s not just you,” Cecile answered in a low tone. “He hasn’t really been himself lately.”
“Probably Janine.” Andre’s voice held an unmistakable note of anger. “I know Bo’s having a hard time with the divorce, but I have to tell you, leaving that woman’s the best thing Bo’s ever done. She’s never been good for him.”
“Hm. I’ve only met her once, but I got that same feeling.” Cecile let out a soft laugh. “David said I felt that because I’m psychic, and I could read her evil thoughts. I had to remind him my gift doesn’t work that way. I can’t read minds.”
“You’re just good at reading people, I think.” Andre chuckled. “David’s always hated Janine, since the first day he met her.”
“Why?” Cecile asked. “I can’t say that I liked her myself when I met her, but it was just a feeling. I had nothing on which to base it. I’m wondering what she did to make David dislike her so much.”
Sam wondered the same thing. He figured his own experience with Janine was hopelessly tainted by his involvement with Bo. A more objective opinion would be interesting to hear.
Andre was silent for several long seconds. Curious, Sam turned his chair around. His friend’s face was thoughtful. “Andre?” Sam asked hesitantly. “What is it?”
Glancing at Bo’s closed door, Andre rolled his chair closer. “I shouldn’t be telling y’all this at all, so keep it to yourselves, okay?”
“Sure.” Sam leaned forward, elbows on his knees. “What?”
Cecile frowned. “I don’t know, Andre. Is this something David told you in confidence? Because if that’s the case I don’t think you should be telling us.”
“He never actually said not to tell anyone at all. Just not to tell Bo.” Andre’s voice dropped to a whisper. “He said the first time he met Janine, she propositioned him. And apparently she wasn’t too happy when he turned her down and called her a bitch for trying to cheat on Bo, with one of Bo’s friend no less.”
Stunned, Sam stared at Andre. “Seriously?”
Andre nodded. “He said she acted like it was no big thing, like she did it all the time.”
“And he didn’t tell Bo?” Cecile’s expression radiated disapproval. “I think he should have.”
“We kind of went back and forth about that,” Andre admitted, glancing at Bo’s office door again. “But in the end, all he had to go on was her hitting on him that once. She never did it again, of course, and although we both kept our eyes peeled neither of us ever actually caught her at anything. So what would we say? You know Bo wouldn’t
