A Game of Thrones 4-Book Bundle
Half the men I send off to look for food do not return. Some are deserting. Others we find ripening under trees, with ropes about their necks.â
âWe came on some, the day before last,â said Jaime. Addam Marbrandâs scouts had found them, hanging black-faced beneath a crabapple tree. The corpses had been stripped naked, and each man had a crabapple shoved between his teeth. None bore any wounds; plainly, they had yielded. Strongboar had grown furious at that, vowing bloody vengeance on the heads of any men who would truss up warriors to die like suckling pigs.
âIt might have been outlaws,â Ser Daven said, when Jaime told the tale, âor not. There are still bands of northmen about. And these Lords of the Trident may have bent their knees, but methinks their hearts are still . . . wolfish.â
Jaime glanced at his two younger squires, who were hovering near the braziers pretending not to listen. Lewys Piper and Garrett Paege were both the sons of river lords. He had grown fond of both of them and would hate to have to give them to Ser Ilyn. âThe ropes suggest Dondarrion to me.â
âYour lightning lordâs not the only man who knows how to tie a noose. Donât get me started on Lord Beric. Heâs here, heâs there, heâs everywhere, but when you send men after him, he melts away like dew. The river lords are helping him, never doubt it. A bloody marcher lord, if you can believe it. One day you hear the man is dead, the next theyâre saying how he canât be killed.â Ser Daven put his wine cup down. âMy scouts report fires in the high places at night. Signal fires, they think . . . as if there were a ring of watchers all around us. And there are fires in the villages as well. Some new god . . .â
No, an old one.
âThoros is with Dondarrion, the fat Myrish priest who used to drink with Robert.â His golden hand was on the table. Jaime touched it and watched the gold glimmer in the sullen light of the braziers. âWeâll deal with Dondarrion if we have to, but the Blackfish must come first. He has to know his cause is hopeless. Have you tried to treat with him?â
âSer Ryman did. Rode up to the castle gates half-drunk and blustering, making threats. The Blackfish appeared on the ramparts long enough to say that he would not waste fair words on foul men. Then he put an arrow in the rump of Rymanâs palfrey. The horse reared, Frey fell into the mud, and I laughed so hard I almost pissed myself. If it had been me inside the castle, I would have put that arrow through Rymanâs lying throat.â
âIâll wear a gorget when I treat with them,â said Jaime, with a half smile. âI mean to offer him generous terms.â If he could end this siege without bloodshed, then it could not be said that he had taken up arms against House Tully.
âYou are welcome to try, my lord, but I doubt that words will win the day. We need to storm the castle.â
There had been a time, not so long ago, when Jaime would doubtless have urged the same course. He knew he could not sit here for two years to starve the Blackfish out. âWhatever we do needs to be done quickly,â he told Ser Daven. âMy place is back at Kingâs Landing, with the king.â
âAye,â his cousin said. âI donât doubt your sister needs you. Why did she send off Kevan? I thought sheâd make him Hand.â
âHe would not take it.â
He was not as blind as I was.
âKevan should be the Warden of the West. Or you. Itâs not that Iâm not grateful for the honor, mind you, but our uncleâs twice my age and has more experience of command. I hope he knows I never asked for this.â
âHe knows.â
âHow is Cersei? As beautiful as ever?â
âRadiant.â
Fickle.
âGolden.â
False as foolâs gold.
Last night he dreamed heâd found her fucking Moon Boy. Heâd killed the fool and smashed his sisterâs teeth to splinters with his golden hand, just as Gregor Clegane had done to poor Pia. In his dreams Jaime always had two hands; one was made of gold, but it worked just like the other. âThe sooner we are done with Riverrun, the sooner Iâll be back at Cerseiâs side.â What Jaime would do then he did not know.
He talked with his cousin for another hour before the Warden of the West finally took his leave. When he was
