Alpha Omega 02 - Hunting Ground
urgentâand as soon as she heard it she felt him running through the dark streets. Felt his panic and the rising rage behind it like a dark tide of violence.
âIâm fine,â she told himâthough after she said it, she wasnât entirely sure that was true. In the heat of battle nothing had hurtâbut sheâd caught a few good punches and given a few, too. She didnât remember it, really. But her knuckles were sore, and so was her right shoulder. And her stomach wasnât too happy with her either. Fortunately, she hadnât taken stock until after sheâd told him.
âAngusâs healer called Angus to tell him heâd been summoned to our hotel room,â Charles said. âJust after I felt your need.â
Anna remembered the power sheâd summoned to shut Tom upâand his conviction that Charles would feel it. Leah, the Marrokâs mate, sometimes used Branâs clout when Bran wasnât even there. Evidently, Anna could do the same thing.
âYes, well.â Anna looked around and took in a deep breath. That secrecy spell, the one the vampires used, had some odd effects on the combatants, too, she remembered, enforcing the need for secrecy. She should have called Charles right away.
âIâd like it if youâd come here, too.â Sheâd like it a lot. âMaybe Angusâbut no one else. Tomâs been hurt pretty badly.â
âBadly enough the rest of his pack needs to stay away,â said Charles coolly. Her sense of him had faded with his urgency, and she wasnât sure she should trust that coolness. The drop from violence to calm had been too fast.
âRight,â she answered, though it hadnât been a real question. âMoira and I got him back hereâbut I didnât realize how badly he was bleeding. Thereâs probably a blood trailââ
âNo,â said Moira firmly, though she was as white as the sheet she was sitting onâas white as it was because they were both covered in blood. âI took care of the blood.â
Anna had learned enough about witchcraft to know that she didnât want to know any more. The alert beast inside her accepted, provisionally, that they were safe.
âYou heard that?â
âI did.â
âSo weâre safe in the room. Tomâs not mortally woundedâI donât think . . .â The room abruptly smelled different. âHeâs changing.â
âBest thing for him to do, if he can,â said Charles. âYou stay back from him. Moira should keep him calm enough that heâs safe to be around. Iâm comingâand Iâll call Angus and tell him that if he values his second, heâll call off the rest of the pack. Iâll be there in a couple of minutes, and you can give me the whole story then.â Her phone stopped making noise, so she decided that he must have ended the call.
âHave you been around Tom when he changes before?â Anna asked Moira softly.
âYes,â said the witch.
âGood.â She let herself sink into the chair opposite the bed. âJust sit still. Itâll take a while longer this timeâand changing when you hurt really sucks. Heâll be vile-tempered when he comes out of it. Maybe not really himself, not for a while. Give him a little time before you touch him. Heâll probably let you know when he can bear it.â
âThey almost killed us,â Moira said. âIf I could have seen themââ
âThat blast of sunlight was impressive,â Anna told her. âNext time weâre attacked by vampires, Iâll cower behind you and shout what they are into your ear.â She paused. âItâs a good thing you were with us. Weâd have lost on our own. Someone knew a great deal about Tom.â She remembered the dog pile of vampires whoâd been trying to kill himâvirtually ignoring her and Moira. âBut they discounted you.â
âWhy would vampires attack us?â asked Moira. âOh, I know they arenât friendlyâbut they are practical. Attacking Charlesâs mate is anything but practical.â
âSomeone paid them, I expect,â Anna said tiredly. âSomeone they were pretty certain could and would keep Charles away from them. Someone who knew weâd be out shopping today.â She looked down at her hands as Tom growled and wheezed with the difficulty of the
