Baby Boy 1: Sacrificed
concerned.
"I don't know. I wouldn't care accept that the person who bought the car is expecting me to arrive at a certain time. If it gets impounded Jose is gonna kill me. Seriously!"
Justin thought for a moment. "You want me to drive it through?"
"Seriously, would you?"
"No problem. I'm getting paid too, right?"
"Yeah sure. Okay."
Justin and Rex exchanged seats while they waited in the line for the boarder. Rex scurried across but Justin was sure to make his cheeks rub against Rex's lap as he did. Rex noticed but was too anxious to react.
"The guy is gonna ask you why we were in Mexico. Tell him we were here for a week. They don't need to know it was an overnight trip. The car's registered under my name if they ask but they won't. They're trying to find out if were smuggling Mexicans or anything. It's all routine."
"Okay," Justin said easing his way to the boarder.
When he was next up, he looked across at Rex who had taken his shades off and was now sweating a little.
"Where you coming from?" the border guard asked.
At that moment Justin drew a blank. "Mexico," he said spitting something out.
The guard who hadn't even looked up from the screen peered into the car. "Where in Mexico?"
Still drawing blank, "all over. But mostly in…" He turned to Rex looking for help.
"Mexicali," Rex offered.
"Oh yeah, Mexicali," Justin said with a smile.
The guard looked through the windows at the front and back seats of the car. "Can you pop the trunk please, sir?" The guard said getting out of his booth.
"Yeah sure." Justin looked around the seat for a lever that would pop the trunk. He found nothing.
"Is this your car, sir?" The guard said standing with his hand akimbo, noticeably close to his holstered gun.
"It's mine," Rex offered. "The trunk thing doesn't work, that's all."
"Which one's the trunk key?" Justin asked Rex.
"It's the engine key," Rex said really starting to sweat.
Justin cut off the engine and was about to get out of the car when one of the guard's hands blocked the door and the other gripped tightly on his gun. "Stay inside please, sir."
Justin froze. Whatever was happening was not good and he sensed it.
"The key, sir," the guard said calmly.
Justin handed it over and then watched the guard retreat in the side rear view mirror.
"Is there anything in there?" Justin asked his buddy.
"Shut up," Rex barked back in a hushed tone.
Justin now also began to sweat. Rex who could no longer keep still in his seat, adjusted the rear view mirror to watch what was going on. Standing behind the car the guard fumbled with the keys. Rex felt his heart start to race.
When the guard leaned over Rex caught a glimpse at the car behind them. In it was Jose and his man. They had apparently decided to follow him to make sure everything was going smoothly. The last thing that he saw of Jose's eyes was a simmering rage when the trunk popped open. Rex couldn't breathe.
Rex turned to Justin with genuine fear in his eyes. "We have to…"
Bang!
Rex's words were cut off by a shot. Rex swung around. What he found was that the view of Jose was once again clear. The bang was the sound of the trunk slamming shut.
The guard returned to Justin's window with the key. "How long were you in Mexico?"
"Just the night," Justin replied without thinking.
"Okay then. Have a nice day." The guard waved the boys through.
Hardly able to hold the key, Justin found the ignition, started the car and was off. When the guys were a hundred yards from the border Rex let out primal scream.
"Ahhhh!"
"What was in the trunk?" Justin yelled.
"I don't know what was in the trunk. Nothing was supposed to be in the trunk."
"Then why were you so nervous?"
"I don't know. I don't know why I was so nervous."
"Seriously! There was nothing in the trunk? You had me freaked out! Shit, I was freaked out!"
Justin laughed and after a moment to compose himself, Rex laughed too.
"You had me so fucking nervous, man. Don't do that to me!" Justin said with a smile.
Rex stopped laughing and looked behind him. As he did a car pulled up along his side. Justin didn't see but in the car was Jose. Jose gave Rex a stern stare and then without fanfare passed by. Rex sunk back into his seat.
"Hey, you want me to drive now?" Rex offered. "You don't know where you're going."
"Oh okay," Justin conceded.
"Just pull over to the shoulder."
Justin pulled onto the deep shoulder and they switched seats again. This time Rex did notice when Justin brushed his ass
