the hell did they find us?”
More gunfire pelted the ferry and the vehicles. Suddenly, Sydney remembered what was lying on the backseat of the truck. Before she allowed fear to stop her, Sydney was on all fours crawling along the ferry’s edge.

Chapter 30
Danny wasn’t paying attention until it was too late.
“Sydney? Goddamn it! What are you doing?” She was leaning into the backseat of the truck, an open target if there ever was one. Suddenly she whirled around, holding both the assault rifle and Danny’s hunting rifle. Brave girl , Danny thought.
Sydney hunched down and scurried back to him. “I thought these would help,” she said, handing him the guns.
Danny checked both weapons’ magazines and handed the hunting rifle back to her. “You know how to handle a rifle?” he asked.
Sydney nodded. “Much better than I handle a truck.”
“It’s a semi-automatic. All you do is pull the trigger. You’ve only got three rounds, so use them sparingly.”
Danny needed to see exactly what they were up against. He rolled onto his stomach to scan the Mexican side of the river when another flurry of bullets ended in an enormous blast that cut through their eardrums. The car behind them burst into flames, and the entire ferry shuddered.
“Stay down!” he told Sydney. He rolled over and looked behind him. The third vehicle at the other end of the ferry, a broken-down Pontiac Firebird, was now a ball of fire. That meant there was a new danger they had to handle. The wooden ferry itself would no doubt catch on fire soon.
Danny looked at the U.S. side. The checkpoint station was a hundred yards away from the river’s edge. A border patrol jeep was speeding from it toward the river.
Danny gawked back at the fire. A wall of flames stretched fifteen feet into the air and then transformed into black smoke that coated the sky. The sound of gunfire had ceased for the moment. He could use the fire and smoke as cover to do something. But what? He scanned the ferry and focused on the rope line. A plan materialized in his brain. He ran toward it and yanked the Junglee Extreme Forces knife out of his pocket.
The rope line sagged a good three feet away from the ferry. The wooden safety railing creaked as Danny stretched out over it. He grabbed the rope line and sawed halfway through it before two bullets struck the railing near him. He slammed down on the deck. Bullets kept coming. He scrambled back to the crawl space that existed between his truck and the car behind it.
The gunfire intensified but also became more concentrated. It seemed that every bullet was hitting the car behind him. Danny figured out the guards’ new strategy. They’re aiming for the gas tank. Why aim for people when you can take out the entire ferry itself?
Danny stared at the rope where he made his cut. Despite the fact that it was nearly severed, it held strong. Cutting the ferry loose was their only chance to get away down the river. But there was no way he could risk standing out in the open at the rope line any longer.
He whipped the assault rifle off his back and aimed at the rope. It was next to impossible that a bullet would hit the rope exactly where he had cut it. Plus, there were less than fifty rounds left. Better save those rounds for the guards anyway.
Pop! Pop! Pop! Bing! Bing Bing! The guards’ bullets continued hammering the car. Sooner or later, one would reach the gas tank.
    Fire! Of course!
Danny dropped the rifle and tore off his shirt. He scrambled on all fours toward the flaming Firebird. He held out his shirt to the flames. As soon as it caught fire, he sprinted back behind his truck. He lunged at the rope line and flung the flaming shirt. It clung to the line, wrapping itself around Danny’s incision.
Danny scurried back behind his truck and grabbed the rifle. Burn baby! Burn! He was so caught up watching the rope line burn that it took him a few moments to realize that Sydney was gone.
Danny feverishly searched the ferry’s deck. There, at the opposite side of the ferry. There she was! It took only milliseconds for Danny to figure out what she was doing.
    “No Syd …”
But it was too late. She had already disappeared into the turbid water.

Chapter 31
Sydney’s fingers sank deep in the muddy river bottom. She stopped herself in midstroke but stayed underneath the water. Her heartbeat echoed around her. Even if she opened her eyes, she wouldn’t be able to see anything in the filthy water.
    Sydney
