Killing Them Softly (Cogan's Trade Movie Tie-in Edition)
ass.â Fuckinâ guy. He had white lipstick on.â
âThe next night he wasnât there,â Frankie said.
âThe next night I wasnât there,â Amato said. âIf I hadâve been that fuckinâ nigger wouldnâtâve, boy. I got Billy Dunn a wood chisel for that fucker, he was gonna grab him in the yard if I was there. Fuckinâ dumb screws, canât always depend on them guys showinâ up when you need them like that, guyâs liable to learn a new way, heâs not careful.â
âYou were in Norfolk,â Frankie said.
âI was in Norfolk,â Amato said. âSit there all day listening to some kid make a fuckinâ asshole outa my goddamned lawyer, all I can think aboutâs what Billyâs gonna do to that coon, I get back there, and then it turns out, Iâm going to Norfolk. Only thing I see that night, thereâs this nun in a gray thing, there, wants to know, do I wanna learn the fuckinâ guitar.â
âI know her,â Russell said. âSheâs all over the place. She was up to Concord once. I said to her, I said: âSister, I wanted to play the guitar, I wouldâve grabbed a fuckinâ guitar.â After that she left me alone. Lot of the guys liked her, though.â
âThat night the nigger was in the hospital,â Frankie said.
âGood,â Amato said. âI hope he fuckinâ
died
.â
âNope,â Frankie said, âbut I seen him. He was missing about three feet of skin off his fuckinâ head.â
âHey,â Amato said.
âHim,â Frankie said, nodding his head toward Russell.
âNo shit,â Amato said.
âPeeled him like a fuckinâ orange,â Frankie said.
âMore like pulling bark off a fuckinâ tree,â Russell said. âGuy had skin like nothing I ever seen.â
âHe came after you?â Amato said.
âSomebody sure did,â Russell said, âsomebody looked to me like he hadda be the biggest chungo bunny inna world, come after me. I had this blade there, another guy I meet onna way over, he told me, I give him a hundred out of my thing there and he had this blade for me. Said I was probably gonna need it. I bet I wasnât in there ten minutes and that niggerâs coming after me. Didnât do it again, though.â
âThatâs how come,â Frankie said. âHeâs a prick but heâs got all the moves.â
âHe clean?â Amato said. âBoth you guys clean?â
â
Frankie
,â Russell said, âyou been
using
something?â
âShut the fuck up, all right, Russell?â Frankie said. âYeah. I havenât had anything but booze since I get out. Not that much booze, either. Mostly beer. I been waiting for payday, I start in on the VO and other stuff.â
âYouâre on pills,â Amato said. âYouâre in, youâre on pills. I seen you, donât forget. You were beating the hell out of them yellowjackets.â
âJohn,â Frankie said, âthe yellowjackets were there. I didnât see nobody serving no beer. I took what there was. I havenât had none of that stuff since I was out.â
âHow about him?â Amato said.
â
Gee
, Squirrel,â Russell said, â
I
wouldnât take nothing. I, ah, I probably had a couple quarts of Ripple and some grass, and I mightâve had one or two dime bags once or twice, but I just snort them, you know? Itâs not like I was using something. I go to Cub Scouts, you know? And they pat you down, there, they start teaching you how to tie them knots and everything.â
âSmack,â Amato said to Frankie. Frankie shrugged. âI ask you to find a guy for me and I got this thing, and all I got to do is do it and we get some very nice money. All I got to do is find two guys that can do a fairly simple thing without fucking it up, and this is the best you can do for me. A fuckinâ junkie. And Iâm supposed to just let you guys go in there and youâre gonna go in and once and for all youâre gonna fuck it up, a job thatâs never gonna come around again in a million years. I donât want to have a whole lot of
fun
with this thing, you know, because I hadda go out and get a guy that looked all right when I got him and then he goes in and heâs on the fuckinâ nod or something. I want the goddamned money. Thatâs
