    must be staying with the Rubas. They’re the only ones close enough in that direction.” Footsteps again. “Are you ready to go?” Robbie got to his feet, putting on his sunglasses. “Ready, Freddy.” He heard Joey laugh, and he wished he could always make him do that. He sounded so good when he laughed.
    As they left the house, Robbie heard a low mechanical rumble getting closer, the ground vibrating. “Is that the tractor?”
“Yes.” Joey spoke louder to be heard. “The guys have the spreader loaded and ready.”
A sweet, nauseating smell filled his nose. “I’ll say it’s loaded.” He fanned his hand in front of his nose. “Lead on. Let’s spread some poop.” He heard Joey laugh again and felt a hand on his arm, guiding him toward the source of the noise.
     
“You got it, Joey?” The man was almost yelling.
    “Sure, Lumpy, no problem.” The noise continued. “There are steps. Just be careful and I’ll help you get in.” Robbie felt Joey’s touch, and then a hand placed his on the cool metal and a foot on the step. Slowly, he climbed up and inside, Joey guiding him until he was in the cab. “The seat’s in front of you.”
    “How will you drive?”
“There’s a passenger seat.” He sat down and then felt Joey’s breath on his lips just before he was softly kissed. “Are you comfortable?” “Yeah, I didn’t expect air conditioning.” The cab door closed, shutting out most of the noise.
“Here we go.” Joey sounded like an excited kid. Robbie felt the huge machine lurch forward, and then they were moving. “This is so cool.” He couldn’t see, but he could feel the powerful machine as it transported them along the road.
“Did you and Arie have a good visit?”

“Yeah.” He wasn’t sure what to tell him about his discussion with Arie.
“He’s in love with you, ya know”
“Arie? No way.”
“He is, Robbie. I can see it in the way he looks at you.”
“Do I detect a hint of jealousy?”
“Maybe.”
Robbie wondered what it had taken Joey to admit that. “Arie’s just a friend. I’m not interested in him that way.” Robbie reached over and found Joey, leaning against him, letting their warmth mingle in the cool cabin.
     
Robbie felt the tractor turn, and the smooth ride of the road was replaced by bumps. He heard the engine change pitch and they slowed. “What’s happening?”
    “I engaged the spreader. It shouldn’t take long.” Robbie felt one of Joey’s arms slip around his waist as the tractor continued moving forward. Regardless of what was happening outside and what they were spreading, inside the cabin, everything was completely different. They rode quietly together.
    Occasionally, he’d feel a bump, but mostly he felt Joey holding him.
It was wonderful being this close to him.
The motion stopped, and he heard gears changing. Then they began moving again and he felt them turn. The ride smoothed out and Robbie rested his head against Joey’s shoulder.
    They spent the afternoon traveling back and forth from the farm to the field. Robbie lost track of the number of times they made the trip. It didn’t matter to him—he was alone with Joey and whenever he left the cabin and returned, Joey kissed him and settled in his seat, pulling them close together. Robbie couldn’t help feeling that the others probably thought it strange that they were cuddling 77

inside a tractor, but he didn’t care. It was wonderful because of who he was with. What they were doing didn’t matter.
Robbie lost all tract of time and was surprised when he heard Joey turn off the engine. “What’s happening? Are we done?” “Yes. Eli should have dinner ready soon.” Joey helped him out of the cab and to his surprise, pulled him close and kissed him hard.
“You’ve been warming me up all afternoon.” Robbie put his arms around Joey and held on for the incredible ride. Joey’s lips felt and tasted so good, his tongue playing and gently probing as they kissed.
     
“Are you two coming in for dinner?” He heard Geoff’s voice behind them, but Joey didn’t stop. He just pulled him tighter. He heard Geoff say something about having dessert first as Joey pulled away.
     
“Joey.” Robbie felt embarrassed that they’d been seen kissing.
