thought he was nuts.” The words sounded wonderful as Robbie’s heavy Southern accent snuck into his speech. “But I had a great time, and I was able to help.”
“If you don’t help at home, what do you do?”
“Read. I’ve got tons of books in Braille, and I play and rehearse. Sometimes I just listen to the radio and stuff. Half the time when I leave my room, someone’s offering to help me get whatever I need or go wherever I need to go. I know that house like the back of my hand and almost no one lets me find my own way around.
Either Mama’s helping me or one of the housekeepers is escorting me where I need to go.” Joey felt Robbie tip backward slightly. “I love this. The feel of the horse under me, the sun, the breeze.” Robbie laughed a little before inhaling deeply. “It smells so fresh.
No exhaust fumes or people, just fresh and clean.” Joey wished he could turn around and see the smile he felt sure graced Robbie’s face. Smiling to himself, he guided Twilight forward.
They approached the woods, and Joey stopped the horse.
“Housekeeper? How big is this place?”
“Big. At least I remember it as big. It had columns and a huge porch out front. It’s been in daddy’s family since before the war.” Joey whistled at Robbie’s description. “You mean it’s an antebellum plantation?”
“Yes. Mama revels in historic preservation, meaning spending Papa’s money, and Papa revels in making it. We’re a good, old-fashioned Southern family.” Robbie’s accent became very pronounced, and Joey laughed at the affectation.
“We’re about to enter the woods. We’ll take it slow in case we come on any low branches.” Joey turned around to check on Robbie and saw Rex loping across the field, heading in their direction.
“We’re being followed.”
“Followed by who?”

“Rex. I think he wants to keep an eye on you.” They started moving forward again, the horse and riders entering the trees. The shade felt coolingly glorious, and the slight breeze was lovely, but did nothing to cool Joey’s thoughts. He was acutely aware of Robbie behind him, his arms, his hands, and the way his pelvis ground against his butt. His… was that what he thought it was? Joey shifted back slightly. Yup. He smiled as he felt Robbie’s hardness press against him. “I take it riding makes you horny.”
“You make me horny,” Robbie snickered softly.
He felt Robbie’s hands slide beneath his shirt, the smooth fingers caressing his skin. “I guess that makes two of us.” Thank God the horse was only walking or he’d injure something important.
Emerging from the trees, Joey directed Twilight around the edge of the pasture, checking out the fence as the lumbering beasts munched on grass inside. They rode around the pasture, checking all the fencing before moving on. Riding fence was usually boring. But with Robbie along, it was wonderfully pleasant.
“Do you hear that?” Robbie asked in Joey’s ear, Joey shook his head no.
“Keep going. It seems to be getting louder.”
“I hear it now. Sounds like an animal in trouble.” He followed the sound until he saw what looked like a small furry body in the pasture. “Aw, looks like a cat got trampled.” The brush near them parted and Rex appeared carrying a kitten by the scruff of the neck. He took one look at them and loped back toward the barn, the kitten rocking in his grasp.
Robbie pointed, “There’s crying over there.”
“Stay here, I’ll be right back.” Sliding down, Joey handed Robbie the reins. “Just stay still, she won’t move.” Walking through the grass, he followed the sound until he came upon another kitten.

Picking up the black and white bundle of fur, he cradled the crying kitten in his hands and walked back to Robbie and Twilight. “Can you hold it?”
He handed the kitten to Robbie and very ungracefully remounted. Taking the kitten, he held it in one hand. “Hang on. I’ve got a little more fence to check, and we’ll head back.” He directed Twilight around the rest of the pasture since they were at the far edge anyway. At the barn, they found Rex reclining in the shade near the barn door, a gray and white kitten climbing on the reclining dog. Joey handed Robbie the kitten and slid off again before setting the kitten on the ground. The little fur ball raced to its litter mate, both of them crawling all over the resting dog.
