Lupi 04 - Night Season
direction.
Cullen was nearly a football field away. Before she was halfway there, another body fell, even farther off. It didnât look like Lily, but with only moon and stars for light, she couldnât be sure. Then two more came through togetherâone large, one small. They fell on the other side of a slight rise, so she couldnât see them once they landed.
Cullen pushed up to his hands and knees, his head hanging. âShit.â
Relief pounded through her. âWhere are you hurt?â she called.
âEverywhere.â But he made it to his feet, though he swayed a bit. âYouâre all right?â
Winded, mostly. Snow was as bad as sand for running. She nodded.
âNo bleeding?â He made that more demand than question.
Ohâright. A little jolt went through her as she realized what he meant. Falls werenât good for pregnant women, were they?
She came to a stop in front of him. âNo bleeding. Iâm fine. The gate was closer to the ground when I fell through. Rubenâs back there. Broken leg and wrist. McCloskyâs with himâhe wasnât hurt. Timms and Gan are with Ms. Wright. Theyâre okay. Sheâs unconscious. I donât know if Lilyââ
âI got her away from the gate, I think.â Cullen was grimly pleased about that. He looked up, scanning the sky. âSpeaking of which, itâs gone. Whereâs that damned gnome?â
âI think he fell on the other side of that rise. One them was really small, anyway. And someone fell just this side of it. I need to see ifââ
âIâll check on them. Here, hold on to this for me.â He handed her his ring, the one with the charged diamond.
âWhy?â
âBecause Iâm bloody freezing. I want fur.â He reached up to unfasten the chain at his neck.
âNo!â
Cullen scowled. âWhat do you mean, ânoâ?â
âYou want to go rip out the gnomeâs throat, and it wonât help. Weâre going to need him. He got us here, and he can damned well get us back. And I need you to have hands. I canât set Rubenâs leg, and Ms. Wright is hurt and I donât know what to do for her, andâ¦â She stopped, gulped, and shivered. âI know youâre cold, but Iâ¦I need help. If you could wait a little longer, I could use some help.â
The scowl lingered. He flicked a glance at the sky, where a half moon hung near the horizon, and muttered, âShe sings loudly here. All right. I can be cold awhile. But youâwhereâs your coat?â
âRubenâs lying on it. I donât want him going into shock or something. Though maybe I shouldâ¦I havenât done anything for Ms. Wright. I sent Timms to check on her, and Gan to keep her warm, butââ
Cullen put his arms around her. âShut up, Cynna.â
âWe canât cuddle now.â
âWarmer this way. Okay, Brooks is in charge, but heâs injured, so it falls on you until heâs well enough to take over. Doesââ
âWhat does all that matter?â It was warmer this way. A lot warmer. âYouâre heating up.â
âI can do it for a few minutes, take the chill off. Cynnaâsurvival by committee doesnât work out well. Someone has to be boss. Ruleâs got the innate authority to pull that off with humans. I donât, so itâs up to you. Does Steve have his gun?â
âHe landed with it out and ready to fire. Howâs your foot?â
âAchy, but okay. Give me back my ring. Iâll go see ifâ¦Guess I wonât have to,â he said, setting her aside. âHere they come.â
Cynna saw two figures topping the rise. Both were too tall to be the gnome. Both seemed to be carrying something, but it was too dark for her to see what. âIs that Tash andâ¦what is his name? Somebody of Wen.â
âNot somebody of Wen,â one of the figures said loud and clear. âWen of Ekiba.â
Cynna stared. âThatâs English. He spoke English.â
âHeâs got a charm translating for him.â Cullen raised his voice slightly. âDonât you, Wen of Ekiba? Youâve been pretending only the gnome understood us, but that was bullshit.â
âPretending?â sputtered a high-pitched voice. âIs pretending you, Cullen Seabourne! You pretending being lupus! Not telling us you being sorcerer! Only sorcerer
