Medieval 01 - Untamed
surprisingly, both of the undefeated knights were warriors returning from the holy crusade.
The Scots Hammer had not yet fought. Nor had Dominic le Sabre.
âYou look skeptical,â Dominic said in a voice too low to be overheard.
Simon glanced askance at his brother. âYou look smug.â
âI was afraid Duncan might sense a trap and not come at all.â
âHe brought every Reever who could ride a horse.â
âAye, but only three of his knights are equal to ours,â Dominic said.
âDuncan is equal to two knights.â
âAye.â
Simon followed his brotherâs glance to the rougharena where four knights stood apart from the general rabble of the Reevers. One of them was Duncan of Maxwell. The others were men who waited and watched the games with the eyes of knights for whom strife and death held no mysteries.
âInteresting that Rufus isnât among the four good knights,â Simon said.
Dominic shrugged. âDuncan, damn his eyes, is shrewd. He knows Rufus envies him. The Scots Hammer trusts only those knights standing with him.â
âRufus is a fool,â Simon said. âPity he isnât the Reeversâ leader. We could lure him into a pig wallow and leave him floundering.â
âSpeaking of pig wallowsâ¦have you seen the priest lately?â
âWith a joint of mutton in one hand, a mug of ale in the other, and a sweet bun stuffed between his teeth,â Simon said sardonically. âYes, Iâve seen him.â
âWhere?â
âNear Duncan, where else? The Church has made no pretense of its preferences. You should have sent the priest north with Johnâs bastard.â
Dominic smiled thinly.
âI thought of it,â he admitted. âThen I thought I might have a use for the Churchâs good offices before Blackthorne Keep was secure in my grasp.â
âHave you need of the priest now?â Simon asked curiously.
âAye. Are the men-at-arms deployed?â
âAs you ordered, lord . Now would you kindly tell me what in Godâs name you have planned?â
âNothing elaborate. I am going to charge the Scots Hammer with the attempted stealing of my wife.â
âWhy? I thought it was your death the Reevers wanted.â
âQuite probably, but that would raise no criesacross the land. However, to steal a manâs lawful wife for purposes of unlawful sexual intercourseâ¦â
Simonâs eyes narrowed. Then his lips thinned into a smile as feral as Dominicâs.
âEven the Reevers couldnât countenance such an act publicly,â Dominic continued. âThe Church would have to be even more publicly horrified. Do you think an excommunicate could lead good knights into battle?â
âYouâre going to kill the Scots Hammer, arenât you?â Simon said after a moment.
âIf I must.â Dominic shrugged. âAnd it seems that I must. The Reevers grow too strong.â
The smile on Simonâs face faded. âIt will mean war.â
âProbably. But without Duncanâs leadership, the Reevers will be much easier to defeat.â
Dominic hesitated, choosing his next words carefully.
Uneasiness blew coolly over Simonâs skin. There was a darkness in his brotherâs eyes that had never been there before, not even after the sultanâs infamous torture rooms.
âIf I die,â Dominic said, âsee that Megââ
âNay! Youâll not die! Iâll protect your back myself. Thomas the Strong willââ
âDo nothing,â Dominic interrupted. âNor will you. I will accuse Duncan of wife stealing. He will deny it. The issue will be settled in a manner no one may questionâOrdeal by Combat.â
âGodâs blood,â Simon said, appalled. ââTis too chancy. A pebble could turn under your foot or he could get in a lucky blow or one of his men couldââ
Dominic lifted his hand, cutting off his brotherâs words.
âIt is the only way war might be avoided,â Dominic said flatly.
For a time there was silence. Then Simon let out a hissing breath.
âBe that as it may,â Simon said, âif the Scots Hammer kills you, I will have his skull for a drinking cup and his blood for wine.â
A smile showed briefly on Dominicâs face. âI believe you would, brother. You are hellish quick with that sword.â
âAnd you are hellish
