Mercy Thompson 01-05 - THE MERCY THOMPSON COLLECTION
the people he thought he did?â I asked.
âA witch who was also a vampire might be able to implant memories, but he couldnât have made Daniel kill. A sorcererâ¦â Stefan spread his hands. âA sorcerer could do many things. I consider myself lucky that he was so eager to make the kill himself that he did not use the bloodlust heâd summoned in me to make me kill the maidâas I was half-convinced he had. I have become arrogant over the years, Mercedes. I hadnât really believed he could do anything to me. Daniel, after all, is very new. You were supposed to be a safeguard, but I didnât expect to need you.â
âLittleton was a sorcerer,â I said. âAnd some idiot vampire chose to turn him. Who did it? Was it someone from around here? And if not, why is he here?â
Stefan smiled again. âThose are questions I shall pose to my mistress. The turning might have been a mistakeâlike our fair Lilly.â
Iâd met Lilly. Sheâd been crazy when sheâd been human, and being a vampire hadnât changed that. She was also an incredible pianist. Her maker had been so caught up by her music he hadnât taken the time to notice anything else about her. Like the werewolves, vampires tend to rid themselves of someone who might draw unwanted attention to them. Lillyâs extraordinary gift had protected her, though her maker had been killed for being so careless.
âHow could it have been a mistake?â I asked. âI saw your reaction. You smelled the demon before we went into the hotel.â
He shook his head. âDemons are hardly commonplace these days. The demon-possessed are caged quickly in mental institutions where they are subdued by drugs. Most younger vampires have never run into a sorcererâyou said yourself that you didnât know what you had scented until I told you.â
âWhy didnât the demon stop this sorcerer from falling victim to the vampire?â asked Samuel. âThey usually protect their symbionts until theyâre finished with them.â
âWhy would it?â I said, mentally dusting off all Iâd ever heard about sorcery, which wasnât much. âThe demonsâ only desire is to create as much destruction as they can. All vampirism would do is increase Littletonâs ability to create mayhem.â
âDo you know something of demons, Samuel Cornick?â asked Stefan.
Samuel shook his head. âNot enough to be of help. But Iâll call my father. If he doesnât, heâll know someone who does.â
âIt is vampire business.â
Samuelâs eyebrows shot up. âNot if this sorcerer is leaving bloody messes behind.â
âWeâll see to himâ and to his messes.â Stefan turned to me. âI have two more favors to ask youâthough you owe me nothing more.â
âWhat do you need?â I hoped it wasnât anything immediate. I was tired and more than ready to clean the blood off my hands, both figuratively and literally, though I was afraid the former was going to be difficult.
âWould you come before my mistress and tell her what you have told me about the happenings of this night? She will not want to believe that a new-made vampire could do what he has done. No more will any of the seethe welcome the news of a sorcerer among us.â
I had no particular desire to meet Marsilia again. He must have seen that on my face, because he continued, âHe needs to be stopped, Mercy.â He took another deep breath, deeper than he needed if all he were using the air for was to talk. âI will be asked about this night in full court. I will tell them what I have seen and heardâand they will know if what I tell them is true or false. I can tell them the events you say happened, but they cannot know they are true unless you, yourself, will speak for me. Without you there, they will take my memory of the maidâs death as fact and your words to me as hearsay.â
âWhat will they do to you if they donât believe you?â I asked.
âI am not a new vampire, Mercedes. If they decide that I have risked our kind by killing this woman, they will destroy meâjust as your pack leader would have to destroy one wolf to protect the rest.â
âAll right,â I agreed slowly.
âOnly if I can come with her,â Samuel amended.
âAn escort of her choice,â Stefan
