Mercy Thompson 01-05 - THE MERCY THOMPSON COLLECTION
Jesse.
âYes,â she said with grim determination.
âShe hurt them,â Gabriel said. âOne of them had a bloody nose and the other was holding on to his side while he ran off.â He gave her an assessing look, which I was glad Adam didnât see. âI bet theyâre more hurt than she is.â
Darryl cleared his throat, and when Adam looked at him, he said, âSend her with an escort to and from school.â Jesse was a general favorite. If Adam hadnât been so enraged, there would have been a lot more growls from the wolves. Darrylâs eyes were lighter than they usually were, too. The gold was eerie in his dark face.
âSend her with a werewolf,â I suggested, âin wolf form. For the first few days he can wait for her in front of the school, somewhere very visible.â
âNo,â said Jesse. âI wonât be a freak show.â
Adam raised an eyebrow. âYouâll do as youâre told.â
âItâs a territorial thing,â I told Jesse. âEven mundane people play those stupid games. They tried a power play and your father cannot just let it go. If he does, the harassment will get worseâuntil someone dies.â Thatâs what all the werewolf politics and posturing that I complained about so much really did, kept people alive.
âYou should call the police and the school and warn them,â said Honey. âSo no one gets hurt.â
âDo a show and tell,â suggested Gabriel. âCall Jesseâs biology teacherâor arenât you taking a course in Current Affairs? That would be better. You can take your class out and give them an up-close and personal with a werewolf. Same effect but less embarrassing for Jesse.â
Adam smiled, showing lots of teeth. âI like that.â
Jesse brightened a little. âMaybe I can get extra credit.â
âThe school will never go for it,â Darryl said. âThe liability is too great if something happened.â
âIâll check into it,â Adam said.
Jesse was a little pale, but she wasnât seriously injured. A hot shower would help with the sorenessâand she needed to shower before her father calmed down enough to realize that she didnât need to tell him who had attacked her. If I could get their scent, so could he.
I made a dismissive gesture at the whole lot of them, Gabriel, Adam, and werewolves. âGo downstairs and work it out,â I told them. âI want to get a better look at some of Jesseâs bruises so I can make sure that she doesnât need Samuel to come check her out.â
I took Jesse by the hand. âWeâll use Adamâs bathroomâ¦â I couldnât actually remember if he had a bathroom, but I couldnât imagine that this house didnât have a master bedroom suite, and besides, heâd come out of it with a washcloth. âSince Adam has chosen to remodel this one.â Sure my tone was a little snideâbut if he was irritated with me, he wasnât going to be thinking about finding Jesseâs assailants.
Jesse followed me through the crowded hallway and into Adamâs bedroom. There was an open door on the far side that could only be a bathroom. I tugged her into it and shut the door.
Then I whispered, very, very quietly, âYou need to shower and get rid of their scent before your father thinks of itâif he already hasnât.â
Her eyes widened. âClothes?â she mouthed.
âEverything,â I said.
She gave her tennis shoes a rueful glance, but turned on the shower and stepped into the big stall, shoes, clothes, and all.
âIâll go get clean clothes,â I told her.
Adam met me at the hall doorway. He jerked his chin toward the bathroom, where anyone could clearly hear that someone was showering. âScent,â he said.
âHer clothes were very dirty,â I told him a little smugly. âEven her shoes.â
âShââ He bit it off before he could complete the word. Adam was a little older than he looked. Heâd been raised in the fifties, when a man didnât swear in front of women. âShoot,â he said, the word obviously not giving him the satisfaction to be gotten out of cruder terms.
âCheeses crusty, got all musty, got damp on the stone of a peach,â I agreed. He looked blank, so I repeated it with proper emphasis. â ChEEZ -zes crusty. Got Al -musty.
