Mercy Thompson 01-05 - THE MERCY THOMPSON COLLECTION
get youâjust as Marsilia dumps Stefan in the middle of your living room. And once you didnât dieâAmber comes and summons you to Spokane. A few wolves get hurtââ
âMary Jo almost died,â I said. âAnd it could have been worse.â I thought of the snow elf, and said, âA lot worse.â
âWould Marsilia have cared? Worried about your friends hereâand informed that the crossed bones on the door of your shop means that all of your friends are at riskâyou take the rope Blackwood has thrown you. And you follow his bait all the way to Spokane.â
Samuel shook his head. âIt doesnât quite track,â he said. âVampires donât cooperate the way the wolves do. Blackwood doesnât have the reputation of doing anyone favors.â
âHey, my pretty,â said Adam in a deadpan imitation of a Disney witch, âwould you like a taste of something sweet? All you have to do is lure Mercy to Spokane.â
âNo,â I said. âIt works on the surface, but not when you really look. I can ask, but Iâd bet the relationship between Amberâs husband and Blackwood goes back years, not months. So he knew them first. If Marsilia just called him and gave him my name, it would be unlikely that heâd know that Amber knew meâwe havenât spoken since I got out of college.â
Iâd had my paranoid moments because of the timing of Amberâs request. But there was simply no way Marsilia had sent Amber, and the likelihood of further Byzantine plots went down from there.
I drew a breath. âI expect that Blackwood thought I was human, at least until he bit me the first time. Bran says I smell like a coyoteâdoglike unless you know coyotesâbut not magic. Stefan told me Blackwood would know I wasnât human after he tasted me.â
Both of the werewolves were watching me now.
âBad luck does just happen,â I told them.
âBlackwood doesnât seem to be the kind of person to do favors for another vampire.â Samuelâs voice sounded almost cheery.
He didnât. Vampires were evil, territorial, and ... I thought of something.
âWhat if heâs making a play to add the Tri-Cities to his territory,â I asked. âSay he read about the attack on meâand saw that I was Adamâs girlfriend. Maybe he has connections and got to see the video of Adam tearing into Timâs body, so he knows our relationship isnât casual. Maybe Corban sees him read the article and mentions that his wife knew me, and the vampire sees an opportunity to make the Tri-Cities werewolves cooperate with him in preparation to move in on Marsilia. Maybe he doesnât know he canât use me to take over the pack. Maybe he would have used me as a hostage. The ghost is happenstance. Just a convenient reason to convince Amber to invite me over.â
âMarsiliaâs just lost her two right-hand men,â said Samuel. âAndre and Stefan. Sheâs vulnerable now.â
âShe has three other powerful vampires,â I told him. âBut Bernard and Estelle donât seem pleased with Marsilia lately.â I told them about the confrontation the night before. âThereâs Wulfe, I guess, but heâs ...â I shrugged. âI wouldnât want to have to depend upon Wulfe for loyaltyâheâs not the type.â
âVampires are predators,â Adam said. âSame as us. If Blackwood smells weakness, I suppose it makes sense that heâd try for more territory.â
âI like it,â Samuel said. âBlackwood isnât a team player. This fits. It doesnât mean itâs right, but it fits.â
Adam stretched the tension out of his neck, and I heard vertebrae pop. He gave me a little smile. âTonight I call Marsilia and tell her what we just talked about. Itâs not set in stone, but itâs plausible. I bet weâll find Marsilia more cooperative.â He looked at Samuel. âIf youâre home, Iâd better go to work. Iâll have Jesse come here when schoolâs out, tooâif you donât mind. Aurielleâs booked, Honey has work to do, and Mary Jo is ... not up to snuff.â
After Adam left, Samuel went to bed. If anything started happening, heâd be up fast enoughâbut it told me that Samuel, at least, didnât think thereâd be an attack in the daytime.
