Mercy Thompson 01-05 - THE MERCY THOMPSON COLLECTION
withdrew.â
âNot âsomeone,â â I said. âYou. It makes sense. She didnât want Heart killing you; she wanted to do it herself.â
âNo.â It was Ben. âI was wrong to suggest a trophy hunter.
This didnât have that feel. It wasnât personal. A woman out for bloodâassuming fae females are like the rest of the cuââ
âThereâs a lady present,â growled Adam. âWatch your language.â
Ben grinned at me. âFine. Assuming fae ladies are like other ladies , this one would have been excited, triumphant over the kill. And enraged when I came along and ruined her fun. She didnât even hesitate when she spotted me. Dropped the gun and ranâno fuss, no bother.â
âWell trained,â said Adam. âOr just a cool thinker.â He looked at me. âAnd while I admit it looks as though I was the target, it could as easily have been Zee or you. Heart had silver bulletsâso the assassin used them, too. It doesnât mean she was hunting werewolves, not when we know Heart was.â
Tony opened the front door. âYou okay, Mercy?â
âFine,â I lied, but I didnât expect anyone here to believe me anyway.
Tony frowned at me, then turned his attention to Adam. âYou have any enemies we should know about? Sounds like Heartâs producer wanted some more publicityâbut we wonât know for certain until we run her down. He had the right paperwork, other than the small fact that it isnât legitimate. There was a series of victim photos, too. Weâll look into how she got them when we talk to her.â
âInternet,â said Ben. âThereâs a website devoted to pictures of dead bodies.â
We all looked at him, and he smirked. âHey. Donât look at meâitâs the job.â He saw Tonyâs blank face and continued. âInformation technologies, ITâyou know, computers. At work, when we get bored, we issue challengesâlike the person who can come up with the worst website gets taken out to lunch. I got the free lunchâthe dead-bodies guy was the runner-up. When I chatted up the bounty hunterâs people, they showed me the photos of the bodies in the file. The dead-bodies website has a section devoted to animal kills. I recognized one of the photos from that.â
âYou are a sick, sick man,â I told him.
âThank you,â Ben replied, looking modest.
âSomeoneâs after you,â Tony told Adam.
âSee,â I said. âTony thinks youâre the target, too.â
Adam shrugged. âIâll be careful.â
Werewolves are tough, and Adam tougher than mostâbut Iâd seen a lot of them die.
âYeah, well, you keep me on speed dial and donât kill anyone if you can help it.â Tony looked at me again. âHey, Mercy. Did you talk to Sylvia? She looked pretty upset when she left. Are they all right?â His heart was in his eyes. He was interested in her and had approached her once. Sheâd told him she didnât date people she worked withâand that had been that, as far as she was concerned.
âShe wasnât happy about Heart pointing a gun at Maia,â I told him. âBut I think she was madder at me than Heart. He didnât bring in a werewolf for her kids to play with.â
His face went police-officer blank. âWhat?â
âYeah,â I said. âI donât think sheâll be coming here to get her car fixed anymore. Gabrielâs not coming back either.â
âYou did what ?â
âCut it out,â growled Adam. He gestured at Sam. âThis wolf would never harm a hair on a childâs head, and Mercy knew it.â
âSpecial circumstances today,â I reminded Adam harshlyâhow could he have forgotten that we werenât dealing with Samuel but with his wolf? âShe was right to be angry. If Iâd remembered Sylvia and the girls were going to be here, I wouldnât have brought him.â
âWere they in any danger?â asked Tony.
âNo,â said Adam, and he meant it.
âDid Mercy know that?â
âYes,â Adam said right over the top of my âno.â âSheâs just feeling guilty because she thinks she should have told Sylvia anyway.â
Tony looked at me. âSylviaâs not unreasonable.â He paused and gave me a little smile.
