Only 06 - Winter Fire
hunger went through Case.
âYou keep talking like that,â he said against her ear, âand Iâm going to forget all about the Culpeppersâ nasty habit of leaving a man behind to finish off the wounded.â
âTalking like what?â
âAbout biting me.â
While he spoke, his teeth closed delicately over the rim of her ear.
She shivered and made a small sound.
âCold?â he whispered.
âN-no.â
âYouâre trembling.â
âNobody ever bit me like that,â she said.
âLike what?â
Sarahâs teeth scraped gently over a pad of muscle on his chest.
His heartbeat doubled.
âLike that,â she whispered. âGentle and teasing.â
âI did. You just donât remember it.â
âWhen?â
âA few weeks back, when you crawled into my bed.â
Her body stiffened.
âI didnât mean that ,â she said.
âSex?â
âYes.â
âSarahâ¦â He searched for words. âHoney, sex can be tender and teasing and hot and wild and everything in between.â
âFor a man, maybe. Not for a woman.â
âYou didnât like my gentle bite?â
She rubbed her nose against the thatch of hair on his chest.
âI liked it,â she admitted.
âYou didnât like having your breasts petted and kissed two weeks ago?â
âCase!â
âDid you or didnât you?â he asked.
âHow would I know? I was asleep!â
âWhat were you dreaming?â
A shiver went through Sarah as she remembered.
âI was lying in the sun,â she whispered. âI was warm all over, as thoughâ¦as thoughâ¦I donât know. I never felt that way before.â
âYou liked it.â
âHow do you know?â she retorted. âYou werenât in my dream.â
âNo, but I was in your body. I could feel how much you liked my mouth and my hands all over you.â
A wild, hot thrill went through her.
I was in your body .
No other man had been that close to her except her husband. Her only memories of Hal were fear and pain and a throttled kind of rage that she should have to endure being bruised and ill-used in exchange for a roof over her head and food on Connerâs plate.
âIn my body?â she asked thinly.
âNot the way you mean. Justâ¦â
His voice died.
How do I explain to an experienced innocent that men tease women with their fingers? he wondered.
âI was petting you,â he said. âThatâs all.â
âInside?â she asked, shocked.
The corners of his eyes crinkled.
âInside,â he agreed. âIt didnât hurt you, did it?â
âI donât know,â she said through her teeth.
âSure you do. You were awake at the last.â
âI donât want to talk about it.â
âWhy?â
âI just donât!â
âYouâll face off raiders over a shotgun and you wonât talk about whether or not something hurt you?â he asked. âTheyâre just words, not bullets.â
She didnât say anything.
âYour husband was a piss-poor man,â Case said matter-of-factly. âMost men are more decent to their women.â
âSure,â she said sarcastically. âThatâs why men pay women to put up with them. Well, thereâs not enough silver in all of creation to make me put up with that again.â
âWhat about your dream of lying naked in the sun, with heat caressing you all over?â
âWhat about it?â
âIt was me.â
âWhat?â
âI was the sun. I was touching you all over. And you liked it, Sarah. I know you did. You ran like warm honey over my fingers.â
She went very still, barely breathing.
âWhen you asked me that morning what I had done to you,â Case said, âI thought you were joking.â
She shook her head slowly. âI wasnât. Iâ¦hadnât everâ¦didnât knowâ¦there was never anything likeâ¦â
She gave up trying to talk and buried her hot face against his chest.
âI feel like such a fool,â she whispered.
âYour husband was the fool.â
âWhy?â
âYou have real passion in you,â Case said. âHe never bothered to find it.â
Sarahâs head came up so quickly she almost clipped his chin.
âPassion?â she asked in disbelief. âYou mean I like
