as much luck teaching him manners as Iâve had with my younger brother,â she said.
Hunter hid his smile by smoothing his sleek black mustache.
âWe had our dust-ups,â he agreed.
âIâll just bet you did,â she said. âAt least you were big enough to whale the tar out of your little brother. Conner is only fifteen and would make two of me.â
âCloser to three,â Case said. âThe boy eats like a plague of locusts.â
âYou, of course,â she retorted, âhave such a dainty little appetite.â
Morgan coughed.
Hunter didnât even bother to disguise his amusement at the tart-tongued widow. He simply threw back his head and laughed out loud.
âWell, I see I wonât have to worry about standing guard,â Case said sardonically. âAll your braying will scare off the Culpepper mules.â
Shaking his head, Hunter threw his arm around Caseâs shoulders and hugged him hard, laughing all the while.
Case didnât smile in return, but his features softened as he returned the one-armed hug.
The clear affection between the two brothers made Sarah smile even as her throat closed around a sadness she hadnât acknowledged until this moment.
Someday Conner will leave me and find his own life , she thought.
Yet even as sadness came, so did a measure of peace.
Thatâs the way it should be. I didnât raise him to keep me company .
But dear God, it will be lonely without him .
âShall I get the horses, Colonel?â Morgan asked.
âIâll come with you,â Hunter said. âSix is a handful.â
âSix?â Sarah asked, dismayed at the thought of that many men to feed. âAre there more of you?â
âNo, maâam,â Morgan said. âWe didnât want to kill horses getting here, so we brought three apiece.â
She looked at both men more closely.
âDid you sleep along the way?â she asked.
âIn the saddle,â Hunter said. âItâs a soldierâs trick.â
âHow long have you been riding?â
âI donât know,â he admitted, rubbing his face wearily. âIâm just damned glad we werenât rushing to a funeral.â
âWeâve had some shovel work here,â she said, âbut so far itâs only been Moodyâs men and a Culpepper.â
Hunter looked toward his brother. The sudden sharpness in Hunterâs features reminded Sarah of Case.
âThe Culpeppers are close by?â Hunter demanded. Case nodded.
âAll we heard about were the two in Spanish Church,â Hunter said. âIs Ab here?â
âOnly until I get him in my rifle sights,â Case said. âThen heâs on his way to hell.â
âAny more Culpeppers?â
âAll of them, except for the one I killed a few weeks back.â
âWhat happened?â Hunter asked.
âHe and two of Moodyâs boys thought theyâd flank us by coming around from behind the cabin after the moon set,â Case said.
Morgan shook his head.
âI heard two tone-deaf owls hooting at each other and went out hunting,â Case continued.
Sarahâs mouth flattened. The terror she had felt for him that night was something she would never forget.
âCase was still hurting from his wounds,â she said roughly. âThe Culpepper nearly got him.â
âWhich one was it?â Hunter asked.
âNot Ab,â Case said succinctly. âOne of the manâs fingers was missing. Last time I was close enough to count, Ab had all ten of his. It was probably Parnell.â
Hunter settled his hat with a quick motion of his hand.
âAll right,â he said. âWeâll worry about taking care of them after weâve rested.â
âTaking care of them?â she asked.
âNothing to worry about, maâam,â Morgan said. âJust some unfinished business from down Texas way.â
âThere are only four of you, counting Ute,â she said. âThere are at least a dozen of those raiders.â
âMore or less,â Case said. âOne or two of Moodyâs men have just slipped out in the night. They donât like Ab.â
âWhen did you last count the raiders?â Hunter asked, looking closely at his brother.
âTwo days ago. Fresh tracks going out. None coming in.â
âWeâll have our work cut out for us,â Hunter said.
