fiercely in return.
âThank God,â Hunter said again and again. Then, âMorgan, come on out. Case is alive!â
âOf course I am,â Case said. âHave you been drinking Morganâs moonshine again?â
Instead of answering, Hunter thumped his brother on the back, pushed him away to get a look at him, hugged him hard again and released him.
Morgan strode out of the brush. The wiry black rider carried a shotgun easily across his shoulder.
âHowdy, Case,â Morgan said. âMighty glad to see you this side of hell, suh. Mighty, mighty glad.â
Case shook the other manâs hand and thumped him on the shoulder with masculine affection.
âYouâre looking pretty good yourselves,â he said, âfor two such ugly critters.â
Morgan laughed and rubbed his hand across his tightly curled black beard.
âWho are you calling ugly, boy?â Morgan drawled. âYouâre as furry as I am. You hiding out as a grizzly?â
Shaking his head, Case turned back to his brother.
âWhat are you two doing here?â he asked.
âWord came to the Ruby Mountains that you had been killed by Culpeppers,â Hunter said bluntly.
The harsh, weary lines of his face said more than his spare words.
âIt was a near thing,â Case admitted.
âHow near?â
âReginald and Quincy were the fastest Culpeppers Iâve ever drawn on.â
Hunter whistled soundlessly. âWhat happened?â
âThey each shot twice before I finished them. I took some lead.â
âYou look fit enough now.â
âI had a good nurse.â Case raised his voice. âSarah, come on out and meet some friends.â
After a few moments she came out of the brush. There was no sign of the supper she had brought to Case. His six-gun, however, was very much in sight.
Her eyes were wary until she saw Hunter.
âFrom the size and cut of you,â she said, smiling, âyou must be blood kin to Case.â
âMrs. Kennedy,â Case said formally, âmeet my brother Hunter Maxwell and our friend Nueces Morgan.â
âMaâam,â Morgan said, lifting his hat. âItâs a pleasure.â
Hunter took off his hat and bowed to Sarah.
âThank you for saving my brotherâs life,â he said. âIf you ever need help, send to the Ruby Mountains. Iâll come at a dead run.â
âThereâs no debt,â she said. âIâve saved more useless critters than your brother.â
âBut not too many, I reckon,â Morgan said dryly.
She laughed, liking the wiry rider.
âYouâre welcome to supper,â she said, smiling at Hunter and Morgan in turn. âVenison stew and cornbread, just as soon as I mix up another batch.â
âThatâs very kind of you, Mrs. Kennedy,â Hunter said.
âThank you, maâam,â Morgan said fervently. âWeâve been living on hardtack and water so long my stomach thinks my throat was cut.â
âHardtack and water?â she asked.
âWe were in a hurry,â Hunter said simply. âA drifter told me that Case was dead.â
Her eyes widened and her heart turned over at the thought of what Hunter must have been through.
âYou poor man,â she said. âNo wonder you look so weary. I know what itâs like to lose your closest kin.â
Hunter was touched by the compassion in Sarahâs mist-gray eyes.
âYouâre a fine and gentle woman, Mrs. Kennedy,â he said.
âIâm sure your brother would disagree,â she said tartly. âAnd please, call me Sarah. Iâve been widowed longer than I was married. Iâve never worn the Kennedy name comfortably.â
âSarah,â he said, smiling. âCall me Hunter.â
She smiled in return. The smile was like her voiceâfeminine, generous, and welcoming in a way that wasnât at all flirtatious.
âYou can save your girlish wiles for someone else,â Case said sourly. âHunter is married to a fine woman.â
Sarah gave Case a narrow, sideways look.
âI have even less girlish wiles than you have manners,â she said distinctly, âand that means not enough for an antâs breakfast.â
Morgan and Hunter laughed out loud.
Case said something under his breath.
She smiled at Hunter. âYouâre his older brother, arenât you?â
He nodded.
âLooks like you had
