Psy & Changelings 01 - Slave to Sensation
answer it?â Tamsyn asked when she put the slim electronic tablet back into her pocket.
âI am answering it.â Answering in such a way took less than 10 percent of her concentration. If sheâd been a true cardinal, it wouldâve taken less than a tenth of a percent.
âI donât get it.â Tamsyn frowned. âIf you can communicate mentally anyway, why the actual call in the first place?â
âBoundaries.â She finished her meal. âItâs like knocking before you enter a house. Only certain people have the right to initiate mental contact with me.â People like her mother and the Council.
Lucas touched her shoulder with the fingers of the hand he had across the back of her chair. âI thought the PsyNet meant you were all in constant contact.â
The PsyNet wasnât a secret but neither was it to be talked about in detail. Sheâd failed part of her conditioning but this had held. Her mouth opened and she said, âPerhaps we should be leaving for our meeting.â
She felt his entire body go so motionless, it was like heâd turned into the lethal beast he carried within. Lucas Hunter wasnât used to being told no. âOf course.â
She shouldâve feared this side of his nature, but found herself fascinated. âThank you for lunch,â she said to Tamsyn, wriggling her foot so the cub would let go. She didnât want to hurt him or get him in trouble. He clung.
Lucas pushed back his chair and stood. âTell Nate I dropped by.â
Tamsyn began to stand. Aware that she couldnât remain sitting, Sascha decided to take a risk. Sending out a narrow telepathic beam, she spoke to the cub. Let go, baby, or youâll get in trouble . Sheâd expected to have difficulty contacting him but the link was made in an instant, as if she were talking to a child Psy. The find was something she shouldâve immediately fed into the PsyNet but she didnât. It felt like betrayal.
The cubâJulianâcouldnât answer, but he let go. He was pleased she hadnât told on him because he wasnât supposed to be chewing on shoes anymore. He was a big boy. Trying not to smile, she rose to her feet. It was difficult to keep her boot out of sight as she walked to the door but she maneuvered so that Lucasâs big frame was between her and Tamsyn.
âDrop by anytime,â Tamsyn said. Putting her hands on Saschaâs arms, the other woman kissed her cheek.
Sascha had frozen the instant Tamsyn touched her, feeling such overwhelming kindness from the brunette that she could do nothing else. Sheâd always imagined she could read the emotions of others but her delusions had never been this badâthere was simply no raw material in the Psy world to feed the fantasies of her fractured mind.
âThank you.â The second Tamsyn let go, she stepped back and walked out the door to the waiting vehicle. It was too difficult to be in that room full of laughter and touch, warmth and temptation, and not hunger for more . . . for everything.
Â
Â
âOh dear,â Tamsyn said, watching Sascha retreat. âI shouldnât have touched her.â
Lucas hugged her to him. âOf course you should have. Just because sheâs Psy doesnât mean we are.â
Tamsyn laughed. âDid you see her boot?â
âYes.â Lucas was the alpha of DarkRiverâheâd known exactly what was going on with Julian. What he couldnât understand was why Sascha had let it happen. And there had been that moment when Psy energy had flared extra bright. Perhaps her telepathic call had gotten heated, or perhaps sheâd been doing something else. Like talking to a cub.
âI never expected a Psy to be so good with children.â Tamsyn laid her head against his chest.
âNeither did I.â Quite simply, she shouldnât have been.
The Psy would never allow a child to nibble on their shoes. There was no reason behind it, no efficiency. Yet this Psy had. âTell me if the cubs say anything interesting.â
The healer of DarkRiver was no fool. âStill nothing?â
âNot yet.â Dropping a kiss on her hair, he said good-bye and headed out.
Sascha was already in the vehicle when he took the driverâs seat. âYour first time with changeling children?â
âYes.â She tucked the chewed toe behind her leg and right then and there, Lucas knew he was
