Simon Says Die
is alive, he could get away with faking his death? He wouldnât go to prison? Heâd get away with . . . murder?â
The way sheâd said âmurderâ had him wondering if they were talking about the man whoâd died in the car accident . . . or someone else. He watched her closely as he answered. âItâs certainly a possibility. It all depends on the evidence. Is there something else you know about Damon that you arenât telling me? Something he did?â
She blinked and refocused on him. âNothing I can prove.â
Before he could ask her what that meant, she waved her hand in the air. âBack to the truce. Iâll accept your help, on one condition.â
Leave it to Madison to make it sound like she was doing him the favor when heâd already gotten shot protecting her, and was burning vacation days to help her. The woman was completely exasperating.
And even though he hated to admit it, completely adorable. That sass and fire was one of the main things heâd always liked about her. âWhat condition?â
âYou canât tell Logan about this, any of it. I donât want him to suspect Iâm in danger. And I especially donât want him to think Damon might be alive.â
âWhy are you so worried about Logan knowing about Damon?â
âBecause Logan would want to fix everything. And there are some things he just canât fix. Iâll accept your help, but with that one condition. Take it or leave it.â
What âthingsâ was she talking about? He wanted to shake her in frustration, but he knew that would get him nowhere. Sooner or later she was going to have to be honest with him. He just hoped it wasnât too late, that someone didnât get hurtâor worseâbefore she decided to tell him what she suspected Damon had done.
âAll right, deal,â he said. âBut I have a condition of my own. Youâre moving in with me. Itâs too dangerous to stay at your house while the stalker is still out there.â
Her eyes widened in surprise. âWhere do you live?â
âDoes it matter?â
A mischievous grin curved her lips. âNot as long as Tessa doesnât come with us.â
He didnât bother to respond to that ridiculous statement.
She stared at her shoes, deep in thought, as if carefully considering whether she could stand to live in the same house with him for the duration of their truce.
If it werenât for his promise to Logan, he might very well have gotten up right then and told her to forget it. He and Madison had shared themselves in every way two people could, and she was worried about him sleeping under the same roof?
âOkay, deal.â She suddenly held out her hand.
He hesitated, belatedly wondering what he might have just gotten himself into. But when a look of uncertainty crossed her face, he blew out a breath and shook her hand.
âFirst things first, give me that list you had earlier today when you went to MacGuffinâs,â he said. âAnd tell me what you were really doing there.â
She rolled her eyes. âI didnât figure you believed me about that.â She grabbed her purse and dug inside. She pulled out a small packet of papers and plopped them in his hand.
âWhatâs all this?â he asked. He flipped through the pages and glanced up at her. âContracts?â
âAlleged contracts. I found those in Damonâs things when I was . . . suspicious of him. That listââshe pointed to the paper on the bottom of the stackââcontains the names and addresses I got from the contracts. I visited all of those places to see if the owners really knew Damon, and if maybe heâd contacted them recently.â
âYou said alleged. Theyâre all fake?â
âYes, as confirmed by each person I spoke with today.â
He flipped through all of them again, looking more closely at each page. âI donât see anything with MacGuffinâs listed on it.â
âThatâs because Mr. MacGuffin shredded the contract. He was suspicious of me, thought I might be trying to pull some kind of scam. I let him have the contract so heâd know I wasnât trying to cheat him.â
He folded the papers and held them in his left hand. âIâll give these to Casey, see if he can find anything useful.â He pulled her to her feet and tugged her
