Stone had one, but he returned it to me.â
âAnd he couldnât have had it duplicated,â Holly said, âsince only the manufacturer has the special key blanks required.â
âRight,â Stone said.

S TONE WOKE SLOWLY the following morning.
Holly was lying naked next to him on her belly, and his hand rested on her ass. He found it companionable to wake up with her next to him, warm and bare.
He ran a finger up her ass, between the cheeks.
âHmmmmm,â she muttered. âMore.â
âMore what?â
âJust more.â
He rolled over and lay on top of her.
âYouâre nicely heavy,â she said.
He was growing in size, and in response she opened her legs wider. âMore,â she said.
âWhere?â
âAnywhere you like.â
She was wet, and he slipped inside her.
âGood choice,â she said.
Stone moved slowly in and out.
âThatâs so good,â she breathed, pushing back against his belly.
âItâs better than that,â Stone said, close to her ear. âYouâre in wonderful shape.â
Holly continued pushing rhythmically against him. âThey toned us up at the Farm.â
âThank you, Farm.â
Holly rolled over. âI want to be able to get my hands on you,â she said, taking him in her hand and reinserting him. She pulled her knees up and rested her ankles on his shoulders. âThere,â she said. âNow.â
Within a minute they had come noisily and lay sweating and panting in each otherâs arms.
âWhat a wonderful way to start the day,â Holly said.
âIt makes me want to go right back to sleep,â Stone said.
âSex renders men unconscious,â she laughed. âIâm quoting you.â
Â
THEY WERE AT BREAKFAST, eating without much conversation. Holly spoke up. âI want to meet this burglar of yours,â she said.
âWhat, you want a date?â
âThanks, but Iâm all booked up,â she said, kicking him under the table. âNo, Iâm just surprised you arenât paying more attention to him.â
âDino and I eliminated him as a suspect.â
âOn what grounds?â
âSince his fatherâs death and his own release from prison, heâs become a valued member of the community; heâs married with a child; he earns a very good living making very expensive cabinets; and heâs too smart to foul his own nest, especially such a small nest. He also has nothing in his record to indicate that heâs interested in committing crimes of a sexual nature, raping and murdering teenaged girls.â
âStill, he has a lot of skills that make him a suspect.â
âI actually had him go over this house and give me his opinion on the security features. He was impressed.â
âLet me get this straight,â Holly said. âYou gave a high-class burglar a tour of your home, pointing out all the security features?â
âYes, and actually he pointed them out to me, not the other way around.â
âGod, youâre naive, Stone.â
âI am not.â
âDonât you know anything about burglars?â
âOf course I do; I worked burglary for a year on the NYPD.â
âHow many did you catch?â
Stone hesitated. âNot as many as I would have liked.â
âThere you go,â Holly said. âA smart burglar is notoriously hard to nail. If he doesnât get caught or seen on the property or leave fingerprints or DNA, and if he has a fence unknown to the police, heâs damn near bulletproof. These guys know this. Even the ones who get caught learn from their mistakes and go right back to work as soon as theyâre out of the joint. Very high recidivism rate among burglars. Thereâs also a significant sexual component to these crimes; burglars are often rapists. They get caught for that rather than for the burglaries.â
âAll right,â Stone said. âIâll introduce you to the guy.â
Mabel Hotchkiss bustled into the kitchen. âOh, youâre already eating,â she said. âI wanted to make breakfast for you.â
âWe fixed our own,â Stone said. âHow was your evening on the mainland?â
âWe enjoyed it very much,â Mabel said, starting to clean up the pots and pans theyâd used.
âYou should have stayed longer.â
âNo, one night there is
